wireless router  by joey on 04-27-2007 at 06:59 PM

my dad has a netgear wireless router, and it talks to his computer via a cable,
but my computer is too far away for cables, so he's bought a zydas wireless adapter.

the only thing is, i cant talk to the routeror the broadband modem (both of which have DHCP)

In theory, im set to 192.168.1.20 and i should be able to ping the router, then the router
doesn't know regognize it so it forwards it to the modem (192.1681.1), which replies.

only thing is when i try it comes up with "destination host unreachable".

im running linux 10.0, and mostly ues shell commands, but its really pissing me off. so if i ever want to go on the internet, i have to go to my local library(!)

help would be good.....

Are you sure this "Zydas" thing is compatible with your Netgear router?

Offtopic Edit: Why does your age say "74"?

If he was 74, his dad that he mentioned in the first post must be pretty damn old. =p

Hey Futureboy/girl, this is 2007, we're still using Linux 2.6. Maybe they dropped support for some old cards sometime 2010-2020. Try an older IP stack.

Otherwise, try a complete power cycle. The router at my last place would always crash for some reason. Beyond that... no idea.

yeah sorry I obviously wasn't full awake and reading properly at whatever time this morning.

did you already configure SSID and WEP for your netgear?

the default gateway for netgears is http://192.168.0.1/

RE: wireless router  by Val on 04-28-2007 at 02:41 PM

This will be kinda technical, but here it goes.

I think you mentioned you have two devices that act as a DHCP server. Your router and your wireless access point. What I suggest doing, is having your router (the one with no wireless) doing the DHCP. What you would need to do is, turn off DHCP on the wireless access point via a web gui. The access point will ask the network "who is the DHCP server" and the router will respond "I am".

I hope this helps. Oh and if it doesn't and something goes wrong, just use the reset button and it should be back to factory default settings.

tried it and i didnt work, if i ping, it just says network unreachable.

and if i turn it off, our other two computers cant talk to the router

this is a bitch to sort out

The netgear router doesn't support WEP/WEP2.
the IP address for the wireless router, is set to 192.168.0.7 and the modem is set to 192.168.1.1

if the router recieves a ping (in theory) it wont regognize it because im on 192.168.1.30
because its on a different subnet, so it forwards it to the modem, which says "here i am"
so then i can go on the internet. but i installed the driver for the adapter, i did everything according to the manual, and it appears to be set up, and it even shows the network its set to,
but the access point is always 00:00:00:00:00, and will not change, when i tell it to set to the correct one.
