Help Fight Diseases (Cancer, AIDS etc) Join the BRAND NEW World Community Grid Team! by aNILEator on 05-01-2007 at 02:40 PM

Unfortunately in this time and age we have terrible life destroying illness's affecting friends, family and ourselves

I myself lost my mother to breast cancer in 2001, she was 39 (40 the next month) I was 11.

My Grandad has now also unfortunately been diagnosed with cancer and is receiving treatment (Thankfully it seems to be going well)

And now I have severe back problems, including but not limited to Scoliosis, Sciatica, 3/4 lower disc degenerations, collapsed discs and 2 disc protrusions.

What I am Trying to say is that I am sure many of you have experienced these life changing disease in one way or another and would love to help put an end to them.

NOW YOU CAN
...And you don't even need to become a doctor!

it's basically number crunching for the researchers on mass scale, the SONY PS3's have this technology built into them now too so when your console is idle it's CPU can be being used to the researchers gather data about whatever project is currently running.

they can easily compare the results then and see various stats; poor example: how many chromosomes are there in a strand of human DNA

Earlier projects were measuring what the content/genetic makeup of the various chromosomes for the human genome project were I think.

It does not demand anything from your computer and only uses idle resources, so if you for instance started up a modern game, it would only use whatever percentage of free CPU 'bandwidth' there was available, rather than a constant 33% CPU usage you know?

more info on all current projects can be found on the world community grid site, where you can also choose which projects to support

Nooooot reeeaaaaaly, that'd be funding this is kinda working

but in the sense of donating something to help the effort then yes. It's also fun and interesting watching the computer crack away at proteins and stuff (you can have it's visuals run as a screensaver) :)

Really? both clients? try again tomorrow, i'm sure there's a mirror on cnet too....

Detail: everyone can see the emoticons and etc, but the money only comes from people who are using them in the USA =).
Also, why to ressurect an old topic?

I've been on this forum for more than half a decade now. Not sure why I haven't joined this before. I should have really started a couple of years back when I started to let my machine idle 24x7. Better late than never :)

If you guys idle as well you could sign up :)
Yes, I know I bumped up a REALLY old thread. The point was to tell the new folk who've probably never seen this that such a thing exists. If it can get them to sign up, why not?

I'm installing it now. I've used the Folding@Home CPU client but it was too much of a strain on my system (the high performance client made my GPU squeal).

I don't know how a CPU works; at the moment "System Idle Process" CPU:98|CPU Time:14hrs, does that mean those cycles are being wasted and I could be using them on this software with no extra strain?

More or less, yeah :P With no extra strain, not really. It will basically use the CPU when it's idle so the SIP (System Idle Process) time will go down and the app will do it's job. The software should slow itself down when some other task needs CPU.

I have noticed the processor taking 80+% CPU when I'm doing nothing. :) I haven't noticed a lag on my system in weeks. Then again, I haven't done that many heavy tasks in the past few weeks..

I've ran it for 4hours so far while I was using Photoshop and they got to 67% and 89% complete and I didn't notice much slowdown.
