Contest unfair to Messenger Plus!/Windows 2000 users by riahc4 on 05-29-2007 at 10:31 PM

I think its pretty unfair that Windows 2000/9x users that have to use MSN Messenger (therefore use Messenger Plus!) can't praticipate in the contest. Alot of 2000/9x users are still out there; I don't think a small update would kill you Patchou :)

PS: I myself am not one of them.

nope :p
it doesn't... unless it's an ad-less way of generating money spontaneously

It doesn't, he just gets the prises for free because it promotes installs of the program :P.

Messenger Plus! 3.xx series were discontinued after releasing Messenger Plus! Live 4.00. There will be no more updates on the 3.xx series, i don't see why the contest should be an exception. And even if Patchou would put out a special 3.xx update just to make the contest work, people will then be mad because he only paid attention to the contest and didn't add some of the improvements in 4.xx in 3.xx too :(.

I understand riahc4's point, don't get me wrong, but having Messenger Plus! Live is simply a requirement.

In that same way you could claim it is unfair to those who don't have a PC.

Imho, it is no different than any other requirement in any other contest.

eg: I can't participate in certain other contests because I don't live in the US since living in the US is a requirement. Or I can't participate in that warehouse contest because I don't have a client card, etc....

Contests do have requirements, and running Plus! Live is the only one (and having an internet connection) in this contest.

I understand it too seeing as it promotes his NEW software with OPTIONAL adware but...It would be a nice touch.

Well those people are then idiots (IMO).

A "silent" update would be nice; By silent I mean, no frontpage news, the build number/release date doesn't increase/update, etc. This way no questions are asked and eveyone gets the contest.

why would it :-/ if he could automagically create money out of nowhere why only do it when people click on his thing :p
RE: Contest unfair to Messenger Plus!/Windows 2000 users by Patchou on 05-30-2007 at 04:04 AM

No, I'm not making any dollar directly from the contest pages, actually I'm losing money everytime somebody clicks on the grid (bandwidth... :p).

A "small update"? I'm sorry to say things don't work that way, it's far from being that easy and even if it was, I have no interest in updating a software that was put aside more than a year ago, sorry :).

Also, as it's not the first time I read that a "lot" of people are still using 9x/2000 out there, here are the numbers (fresh from this week) :

Messenger Plus users from version 1.xx to 4.xx (basically, what really counts) :
Windows Vista:      2.82%
Windows XP:        95.20%
Windows 2000:      0.89%
Windows Me:          0.26%
Windows 98:          0.78%

And here are the stats from version 1.xx to version 3.xx only (coming from versions compatible with all the old MSN Messenger clients) :
Windows XP:        89.50%
Windows 2000:      4.68%
Windows Me:         1.39%
Windows 98:          4.10%

I invite everybody to link to this thread in the future for similar debates. Basically, the hard fact is: there's not much point in developing public software for anything below XP nowadays.

Because aMSN and Pidgin are open source and you don't need a plugin for it - anyone can make their own modifications or somene else can do it.

Because MsgPlus is a one-man project and he can't be expected to be coding multiple plugins for multiple platforms for multiple messengers.

Because we all know no one would download MsgPlus for aMSN or Pidgin.

Because there's no reason to.
