You could try and give more information here. Knowing that a PC is locking up doesn't really narrow it down...

RE: Constant PC Freezing by joey on 06-01-2007 at 08:40 PM

one of your programs might have a memory leak, my firefox does. if i leave it on all night the pc's nearly frozen!=s

or a virus/worm?

RE: Constant PC Freezing by Dr4g0n on 06-01-2007 at 08:43 PM

Or conflicting software, or a hardware fault, or a corrupt system file, or a dying hard drive, or a failing power supply.

There are a myriad of problems that could be causing it; I see no point attempting to solve this without more information.

Stop PC Freezing ?
Simple enough for basic information.

That's actually a good point :P if you've just installed Vista, try rolling back to XP. If you've recently bought your PC [ie, did not upgrade], try a Linux live CD and see if the crashes stop. [You can download a Live CD from the Ubuntu website]

RE: Constant PC Freezing by Verte on 06-02-2007 at 01:18 PM

There wouldn't be hard drive activity when it's clamming up would it?

RE: Constant PC Freezing by insomniac on 06-02-2007 at 01:31 PM

there is on and off it really does what it wants lol

RE: Constant PC Freezing by Verte on 06-02-2007 at 01:40 PM

Sounds like it might be thrashing. Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the task manager, and see if there is anything suspicious running. Check your memory usage and see what it's like. Go to control panel - system - advanced - performance options, and if you had heaps of free memory, reduce the size of your page file, if your memory was low, increase it. [might fix it, but YMMV]

RE: Constant PC Freezing by insomniac on 06-02-2007 at 01:52 PM

Iv done that but cant see anything sus iv increased room ect the help desk said it could b a corrupt file for windows itself and that id have to reinstall it but id prefer not to cause that means i have to put all my music back on it and because i have a slow CD/R it takes too long to put it all back on

RE: Constant PC Freezing by Voldemort on 06-02-2007 at 02:02 PM

I think your computer is overheating... Touch it. Is it hot? :p

RE: Constant PC Freezing by insomniac on 06-02-2007 at 02:08 PM

RE: Constant PC Freezing by Voldemort on 06-02-2007 at 02:09 PM

I still think it's overheating :p

RE: Constant PC Freezing by insomniac on 06-02-2007 at 02:13 PM

mercury nt sure on the statas atm it only has one fan the motherboard is tiny it got one ram slot and 1 pci it hardly got anything

RE: Constant PC Freezing by Voldemort on 06-02-2007 at 02:15 PM

I doubt one fan is enough to cool it :p talk to their support :p

RE: Constant PC Freezing by insomniac on 06-02-2007 at 02:35 PM

I did and they said its probly something to do with the windows software and to re-install

RE: Constant PC Freezing by insomniac on 06-02-2007 at 02:44 PM

There has to be another way to do this without having to re-install

RE: Constant PC Freezing by Verte on 06-02-2007 at 02:54 PM

It might be a legitimate daemon putting stress on the CPU [my laptop did the same thing when I was running ZoneAlarm + XP, uninstalled ZA and it worked fine]. Try terminating AV and indexing services one at a time to see if it makes a difference.

EDIT: Oh! And make sure you've got the latest Windows updates. You may need to manually download them.
