Getting a guitar... by remember_987 on 06-14-2007 at 10:20 PM

Alright since I don't really know what I am doing I thought I might ask for some help here. Over the summer I am trying to line up a job and I REALLY want to get an electric guitar but dont know what to look for, can somebody help me figure out what I want? Also i'm trying not to break the bank so something under 600$ would be nice. Any help is appreciated

Well my first guitar I saved up for was a Fender Stratocaster - just a standard one. It's been a very good guitar to me and sounds pretty damn awesome as well. Being a standard it didn't break the bank either, I've seen them for the equivilent of around $500... Or if you wanna take a step down from that you could alwasy look at the 'cheaper' makes. Take squire for example, squire are a cheaper variant of the fender guitars, but are owned by fender themselves. Like how dell is owned by the same company as alienware. There are these cheaper makes for loads of the larger companies, you might want to look into epiphone guitars as well (the 'cheaper' variant of the beautiful gibson guitars).

I, personally, don't like Flying Vs :P

Anyway, if you've got $600 you got quite a wide choice. Your best bet would be to pop in to a local store, if you have one, for their advice and to look at a few different makes and models.

I personally, currently have a Squire Stratocaster. It plays well, best guitar I've had so far.

My dad has a Line 6 Variax 700 which is awesome :P But  it was expensive ;[

an ibanez would be good, they sound great and they dont cost a lot, a friend of mine has one, but if you save more buy a gibson les paul i have one of this and they are the best :D

Ibanez are probly your best bet. I own two, one was my first guitar. They are excellent guitars and played by many professional guitarists.
I wouldn't go for the stratocaster, everyone has them and you'll get bored of it. However, there are some really cheap imitation stratocasters out there.
BC Rich are nice, and have a very 'metal' apperance. Although slightly more expensive.
Gibson make excellent guitars too. Especially the les paul.

In the end it all comes down to the style you like, and quality you are looking for. If your looking for a cheaper starter guitar i suggest looking around in your local music shops for a package with a guitar/amp together. Go for one of the major brands such as Ibanez rather than a cheaper brand - Your guitar will sound better for longer.

I also like Epiphone and Schecter

Not really a guitar-specific tip, but just make sure they don't try to sell you something which they're just trying to get rid of - especially if you're not sure what to buy and they offer you a "great deal" - do your research before buying (Y)
