Alternative Sponsor? by Chris4 on 06-17-2007 at 02:19 PM

Firstly, I know there isn't an alternative to the sponsor Plus! already has, otherwise it would be the sponsor, but I've never seen it discussed so I thought I would start a discussion :P

How comes there isn't an alternative sponsor? One that is more likeable, not adaware, etc.
I find it strange that no company/business would want to sponsor such a popular add-on ?

Sorry, just need someone to clear it up for me :P

Thanks.

Btw, I don't have a problem with the current sponsor.
I just searched, I see there was a discussion in 2005 lol.

you're kidding? :p

It has been discussed a hell of a lot of times. So much even that many threads have been removed already (the ones which always ended in flames). But many threads still exist about it though...

It comes down to:

If you have an alternative (a proper one! Not something like 'Google-ads'), just post it. Not much needs to be discussed about it I think.

Also, remember that Patchou probably has a contract also (well, most likely :p). Changing sponsors (if there would be any suitable alternative in the first place) isn't that easy either, probably, I think...

;)

Guess I wasn't involved in the discussion then, sorry :P

Thanks for clearing me up though.

I thought there was a bit of an alternative sponsor where you could sign up for things (basically spam).  I'm sure I have heard it talked about a very little bit and quite sure NanaFreak one day actually called me in to take a look at it....

The mailinglists thing? It was used for a short while (maybe only in beta, can't remember). Would popup a website after installation asking you to join up to 3 mailinglists. It turned out not to work very well, so was canceled again after testing it.

ermm...
what about...
all those google programs that grow more common today?
like Java Run Time Environment that comes bundled with Google Desktop Search or Google Toolbar ?
I don't really know, I'm just popping out random suggestions.

Suggestions are always good. But i think many people forget that CiD (the current sponsor) is also sponsoring all the servers and bandwidth, which are at least 8 servers (AFAIK, probably more) pulling TBs of data per day. I don't really see a new sponsor program doing that, which would mean a lot more money to pay for Patchou if he switches.

mmm
interesting, that's a nice sponsor.
just a thought, but you could have a BT to help with file transfers, and use some caching mechanism to reduce server loads.
