Is your wireless network secure? by absorbation on 07-04-2007 at 07:20 PM

Wireless networks are awful to setup. Some amazing technology ruined when it comes to creating instructions. I've only realised today my network was not secure. I had a password on it, but I used a WEP key (default for the majority of routers). I look at my neighbours connections, and 4/5 off them are not secure.

Maybe yours isn't? Do you even use a password and with what kind of encryption :P?

I just want to find out.

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by kao on 07-04-2007 at 07:30 PM

The first think I would do if I wanted/needed/had wireless would be secure it.

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by user35870 on 07-04-2007 at 07:30 PM

I don't have Wireless, but if I had, I would of course secure it.

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by Nathan on 07-04-2007 at 07:31 PM

I dont need a password because there's no need, we have enough land so people cant access it without coming quite far into out land

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by Kenji on 07-04-2007 at 07:32 PM

I use WEP. My router doesn't like WPA for some reason.

What's your router, I know BT don't seem to get on with it :P. WPA is lower down the choice list and it's easier to use as well. There is no need to create a key, you just have to remember your password :P.

WEP is not secure, you may as well not have a password really. I'm really annoyed Netgear didn't tell me that.
RE: Is your wireless network secure? by foaly on 07-04-2007 at 07:37 PM

securing your wlan is sooo 2006...
my wii wouldn't work properly and there is no good reason to secure it anyway... if my internet becomes really laggy I'll just block the mac address off the person causing that...

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by Supersonicdarky on 07-04-2007 at 07:38 PM

- wpa
- disabled ssid broadcasting
- mac adress filtering

unhaxable

I don't have wireless conection, but if I had, I would secure it too :)

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by joey on 07-04-2007 at 07:42 PM

my dad used to use his laptop for free broadband off one  of our neighbours before we got broadband! :P and yes its secure he know a good bit abbout shizzle related to technology so we're k.

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by Menthix on 07-04-2007 at 07:42 PM

Hmm... I should get an accesspoint, home alone for a week soon, a little more flexibility would be nice then :p.

I gave away my last accesspoint, because most of the time i dont use my laptop at home... but when i actually have to make my own food downstairs... :D

PORN

Right now i'm stealing a wlan that has 1024/256 kbps.... double than mine...

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by absorbation on 07-04-2007 at 07:48 PM

Have any of you ever set up a wireless network? It's the most annoying thing you can do. The instructions are ridiculously unclear, and I've used three different routers :P.

No wonder my neighbours don't put passwords on, they are just happy they got it working.

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by duck! on 07-04-2007 at 07:52 PM

Mine is secure, although it came like that.  :zippy:

well that really does depend on the router some off them are really easy... and some off them don't make any sense at all...

Don't read instructions then :p. I've set up my Linksys when i still had it, setting up WPA + MAC Filtering + Disabling SSID was pretty easy without instructions.

I did have problems on 1 or 2 APs from other people that were from some unkown cheap brand and have crappy web interface.

:/

It took me like 5 mins to get mine working out of the box, and this was like 3 years ago.

I know. It just likes to restart all the time with WPA for some reason, should be getting a new one soon anyway

EDIT: The router is a Belkin F5D7633-4 =p

same (y).

Same as above, but WPA-PSK (WPA+WPA2 mode). It was a real bugger trying to get the 64 character key onto my PSP :P.

Also, the internal settings page is only available over wired lan, not wireless. Just in case someone managed to spoof my MAC address, find my WPA2 key and know the name of my SSID... Well okay, so they could just nick my PSP :).

wep but with mac filtering

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by MeEtc on 07-04-2007 at 08:35 PM

I don't have my own wireless network, I leech off others :zippy:

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by Lourix on 07-04-2007 at 08:38 PM

WEP keys do come in handy where I live cause loads of people have wireless and some people a few weeks ago (By mistake) connected to my network and it really made things slow and horrible, so it helps to have a WEP key.

People can still connect to your network with a WEP key. The encryption key has been discovered :P.
RE: Is your wireless network secure? by Jarrod on 07-04-2007 at 11:55 PM

wireless networks are simple to set up
192.168.1.1
wireless>enable wireless,
options>enable encryption
enter passwords or keys and done

my brother's laptop requires you to put the passkey in using hexvalues  lucky i only needed to put it in once

You do understand that you have to make up your own key to use right?

Anyway, I'm also using WEP, I know it's easy to analyze the key of it (Had to do it myself in class), but my Nintendo DS doesn't support WPA and I don't think there are much computer savvy people around here anyway so :P
RE: Is your wireless network secure? by Woraug on 07-05-2007 at 12:54 AM

I just use MAC address filter.  It only allows addresses I've listed to connect.

I run a similar setup. I ran WEP for a wile then when I heard it was crack able I switched emediatly. Then again I live in a area where no one would no how to steel my connection. So instead I "borow" every one else's.

I never had a problem with my neighbours using my internet connection as long as they check their mail or surf the net or something and not using it to download from my newsserver with 1mb per second...
RE: Is your wireless network secure? by Jarrod on 07-05-2007 at 11:45 AM

my wireless network is unhaxable
:P
not turned on

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by joey on 07-05-2007 at 11:46 AM

no chance of being leeched by meetc then! :P

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by John Anderton on 07-05-2007 at 01:21 PM

I don't have a wireless network setup atm but when I do, I use WPA or WEP :)
Wireless networks at my place are temporary and no one here uses wireless so I guess its pretty safe for me to use it the way I do :)

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by absorbation on 07-05-2007 at 01:22 PM

It's not your neighbours to be worried about really. When you see a white van outside your house with an aerial coming from the roof you should start to panic :P.

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by joey on 07-05-2007 at 01:42 PM

the only thing is if your neighbours have a cap on and suddenly they have no internet thats another time to be worried incase they catch youuuu!:P

Not for all routers....

By what I said, I meant *MY* router was like that. Most aren't by default tbh.

As for living in the middle of nowhere... I'm sure if you use the pringles tube method with a signal booster, you can actually get signals in the range of a mile. [Searches for link... gah didn't bookmark it.]

I've also noticed that most of the WiFi networks in my scan radius have recently become protected - probably because we had a party about two months ago where I brought my PSP out and started using some of the guests internets :p.

Anyone wanna supply me the link to how to crack  a wep key (a)

Well thats that. APs crack fairly often but sometimes there is just nothing you can do. Obviously you are not allowed to illegally crack other people's wireless connections, this is purely for penetration testing purposes and some fun.

RE: Is your wireless network secure? by Rolando on 07-06-2007 at 03:00 AM

No, it is not.. but I'm sure none of my neighbors uses it... since they probably can't

I still don't see why WEP is industry standard, I believe WPA is easier to use as well :P.

I have the same setup as Sam, I am the only one within range of myself who has a wireless network.

Occasionally this dodgy unsecured network pops up but the signal is way to weak to connect.
