Windows Live Messenger 8.1.0178
Messenger Plus! Live 4.23.0.276
If you send a message with emoticons selected from the WLM panel they will not show up in the recent sent messages.
Also therefore when you attempt to use oChatWnd.EditText because Plus! doesn't recognize the emoticon it will get wiped out if you edit the message.

While it does show up in the chatlog, so it doesn't look like this should be some kind of limitation.

EDIT:
You will also find that if a Script tries to edit the text after it has been sent that the emoticons will disappear as well. The easiest way to fix this is to use MP!L's emoticon panel rather than the WLM emoticon panel.

Will finally be fixed in the next version.
