NO AERO with VISTA? by Steven on 08-01-2007 at 04:43 PM

Hello. So I got Vista, (legally) Home Basic edition. But I was told I needed at least home preimuim for aero. So i upgraded (legally) I still didnt have it, so I upgraded to ultimate, (legally) even at ultimate i cant find aero anywwhere.

Thats what I see. Any idea why? Could it be that i have a bad graphics card? But that doesnt explain why when I searched Aero I got no results.

Its supposed to be like this:

It sounds like your computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements for Aero.  Most older laptops (which, I seem to recall from your other posts, is what you have) wouldn't.

Anyway, the requirements are here and a few tips that may still be useful in some cases are here.  See if that helps.

whats your windows experience index?

RE: NO AERO with VISTA? by Mnjul on 08-01-2007 at 05:44 PM

Right click on the Command Prompt menu entry and select Run as Administrator.

or, if I remember right, when you run cmd from Run, you have to press Ctrl+Alt+Enter (or Ctrl+Shift+Enter) to run it granting Admin Previledges.

1/ Ensure that you have the following registry value set to :
>
> HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\Composition set to 1 (32-bit DWORD)
>
> HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\CompositionPolicy set to 2 (32-bit
> DWORD)

I gave you that link because it wasn't going to hurt to try, but it is far from guaranteed means to force-enable Aero --  it applied in some situations, to a beta release (so it may no longer work at all).

You should start by figuring out whether your hardware even comes close to the requirements.

Edit: also try answering shawnz's question.  :P

glass needs 2 at least.

are "graphics" and "gaming graphics" gray by any chance? you might not have a graphics card driver.

"        Your Product is Not Supported for a Vista Upgrade"

Damn. Well I guess I can use it without the glass and 3d flip..
RE: NO AERO with VISTA? by ShawnZ on 08-01-2007 at 07:41 PM

what graphics card does it have? you probably don't have the driver.

RE: NO AERO with VISTA? by Steven on 08-01-2007 at 07:45 PM

Ati radeon IGP 340m

RE: NO AERO with VISTA? by Mnjul on 08-01-2007 at 07:59 PM

From what I wikied it seems to support only up to DirectX 7 so Aero won't run on it.

just because dircetx9 is installed doesn't mean your graphics card supports it :p

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Aero#Requirements

"The minimum requirements for graphics cards from the major vendors include the Radeon 9500 from ATI Technologies, the GeForce FX series from NVIDIA, and the Intel GMA 950."

They are old cards anyway :P

Except for GMA 950...
