When you say unexpectedly are you sure its just not overheating or something? And how often does it do it? and does it like restart meaning it goes back on without you turning it back on?

it sounds like its trying to go to sleep, and failing. try changing power plans to "high performance." Start > Control Panel > System & Maintenance >  Power Options > "High Performance"

don't know vista but it sounds like a fatal error reboot...

if its a fatal error it wouldn't have time to fade to black before shutting off :p

Call/E-mail support. They should be able to activate it for you.

Are you sure it's a Windows notification and not some dodgy advertisement trying to trick you into downloading crap?

As for the rebooting problem, I just came across this knowledge base article which discusses this update. Apparently this update resolves a problem where the computer stops responding or restarts unexpectedly when you play video games or perform desktop operations.

Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties. Your system type will be listed in the System section.

...and even windows notifications can be faked (most likely, anyway), a simple C++, C#, VB and most other coding platforms can do it.
