WLM 8.5 BETA - Privacy Issue? by Spunky on 08-11-2007 at 07:11 PM

I was talking to a contact who was appearing offline, yet I could see when  they were typing a message... I thought things like that shouldn't be possible...^o)

Ive always been able to see them typing whether they are appearing offline or online.

why shouldn't it be?

RE: WLM 8.5 BETA - Privacy Issue? by Menthix on 08-11-2007 at 07:42 PM

Why a privacy issue? As long as the user doesn't start typing a message to you there will be nothing to see. So the user has full control over whether he/she wants to reveal the appear offline status or not, and once you start typing a message you probably mean to send it, so you will reveal the appear offline status anyway.

I agree with Shiny Rabbit: if you're going to talk as offline to someone, this contact will see that  you're actualy "online"....

But you could use the Typing Invisible: http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=68641&page=1

It sends information to the user meaning that they are online... if someone opens the wrong conversation accidentally it's detectable.

Well true. But only when he/she opens a convo with the wrong person AND starts typing at least 1 character AND the other person happens to have a convo window open with that user so he/she will actually see the "user is typing" message, or the user has some protocol sniffing tool.

I'd just consider that a user error :). If the user is too lazy to read to who the message will be sent before typing then they user should face consequences :p.

WLM specifically tells you that if you chat with someone they will know you're appearing offline. Besides, if you're chatting with someone, it doesn't hurt to see them typing since you know they're there anyways :p It's not a privacy issue at all.
