I like the default gedit colours, though I use emacs. White background, black text [AT LEAST 14 pt- it makes a real difference, try it! If you've got the screen real estate, go 18pt!], green types, blue comments, maroon reserved words, etc. If anything stands out to me to make a difference, it would be changing that light blue to something else.
