WLSuite Soon to be released, any other testers annoyed? by aNILEator on 09-05-2007 at 10:29 AM

All good that's it's being released but I doubt it's going to be solid.

Seriously, I'm a bit miffed off at microsoft, I've been a tester for wlsuite, everything is still buggy in places, old graphics from outlook express in wlmail, wlphoto gallery won't even install outside America.

We've only had 1 beta for each (there was a test update for messenger via windows update but it was only to test the system no actual fixes) I just hope they've fixed all the many bugs we found/suggested in connect. even though almost every suggestion ended in the 'no, but we may look into this at a later date'

It does strike me as why do they even need connect testers if they're not going to use them to their full potential

RE: WLSuite Soon to be released, any other testers annoyed? by vaccination on 09-05-2007 at 06:58 PM

I agree, I thought it was pretty quick. Surely they can't have fixed everything in 1 beta?

It'll be interesting :P

RE: WLSuite Soon to be released, any other testers annoyed? by Oxy on 09-05-2007 at 08:07 PM

Yeah, i've submitted loads of things, same old excuses though.

RE: WLSuite Soon to be released, any other testers annoyed? by absorbation on 09-05-2007 at 08:10 PM

On connect, testers seem to just get the reply:
'This fix/ suggestion won't be applied in the next release, but we will consider it for future builds.'

Using Connect is also ridiculously stupid, I can't navigate a thing.

We got it :

The new Windows Live installer is truly horrible. It took me almost 30 minutes to install just Messenger and even then i didn't have an option to not install Sign-in Assistant. I know more people hate this bundled installer, so i extracted just the new Live Messenger installer in a few languages so you don't have to go trough 30 minutes of pain for a Messenger update that doesn't seem to have anything new anyway.

These files will install Live Messenger "2008" v8.5.1288.816 WITHOUT Sign-in Assistant or the buggy Windows Live installer:

EDIT: MOAR working links added.

Separate installers in various languages...

The installers will do their job automatically without showing anything on screen, after they finished Messenger should be installed and accessible from the startmenu.

How to extract separate (clean) installers yourself:

These steps will work for all the Live products bundled in the installer.

1) Set your preferred browser language to the language you want your Live products in. Don't worry, just go to step 2 directly if you don't understand this.

2) Visit http://get.live.com/wl/all to download the Windows Live installer in your own language, or if your language isn't available yet, get the English version at http://get.live.com/en-us/WL/config_all. Make sure you only select the parts you want before you start the download.

3) Run the WLinstaller.exe you just downloaded and let it download all the products you want. Unfortunately installation will automatically start after that, just ignore that and let it go for now.

4) Press Start > Run... > and open "C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Application Data\WindowsLiveInstaller\MsiSources".

5) In the folder you just opened you should see Windows Installer Packages (.msi files) if the installer finished downloading successful. If there are multiple of these files you can check which product each file is by right-clicking them > Properties > Summery > Subject.

6) Copy the .msi files of the products you want to a safe place (for example your Desktop). Rename the file to something more famaliar if you like.

7) Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. You can now remove the crap the Live Installer forced you to install like "Windows Live Sign-in Assistant" and "Windows Live Installer".

8) Use the .msi file you copied in step 6 to do clean installs. These MSI packages install without showing anything on screen, after they finished you should find the working product in your startmenu, if not, reboot and try again.

9) Share the MSI installer you just extracted with people who have problems with the full Windows Live Installer, or people who just don't want the extra crap.

RE: WLSuite Soon to be released, any other testers annoyed? by Patchou on 09-06-2007 at 04:47 AM

It's good to see I'm not the only one who despises this new installer.. I don't have an habit of criticizing new Messenger versions but this time, really, this sucks.

The installer took for ever. For that only I can imagine a big amount of people cancelling before the end.

RE: WLSuite Soon to be released, any other testers annoyed? by andrewdodd13 on 09-06-2007 at 08:55 AM

Yeah, I didn't even like the basic WLInstaller that was bundled with the 8.5 Beta, it was quite buggy when I used it then, and I would imagine it still is.

PS. Menthix - your site doesn't appear to be set up to handle MSI as a downloadable MIME-type - Firefox just tries to display it in the browser here, which isn't very helpful. :P

I just found on how to install it on  Windows Vista 64 bit but not sure if it works still you can try it out.

Here is the link.

You can download and install http://random.menthix.net/mpl_mirror/Live%20Messe...8.816%20-%20EN.msi. The end result is the same as http://www.anti-tgtsoft.com/?p=14 should do (well, i think... if the HEX patching is only to allow you to run the Windows Live Installer under 64bit).
RE: WLSuite Soon to be released, any other testers annoyed? by aNILEator on 09-06-2007 at 10:57 AM

Thanks but I also use Mail and writer aswell and fancy trying Photo GAllery, also I am wondering if there is any difference between the US and GB download pages (I know photogallery beta 1 was in US whatever and didn't work)

Setting preferred browser language to en-US or en-GB both redirect to the same http://get.live.com/en-us/wl/all page.
RE: WLSuite Soon to be released, any other testers annoyed? by aNILEator on 09-06-2007 at 05:51 PM

Well got all installed thanks to sunshine sending me her files photogallery blabbers on about wanting some 2005 runtimes and to re-install it, so i may try tracking it down, may not bother.

Oh look windows live mail has the same mailto register problems as last time /first beta 8-)

Right, i think i'll have to contact Sunshine on WLM and beg for the Photo Gallery installer. I've totally given up on this Windows Live Installer crap (as you can see in my status image). Took me almost 2 hours to install Messenger this morning. I managed to get hold of Mail from someone so installed it that way, much easier (and faster) than WL Installer
RE: WLSuite Soon to be released, any other testers annoyed? by absorbation on 09-06-2007 at 06:28 PM

Windows Live is everything wrong about modern Microsoft, it's a disaster in my opinion.

RE: WLSuite Soon to be released, any other testers annoyed? by Oxy on 09-06-2007 at 06:31 PM

Has anyone also noticed on messenger when you click the help menu after clicking sign in, it turns into the menu bar options?
I mentioned this to MS atleast once, and i know a few other people have.

EDIT: WLinstaller suck ass, and takes forever to load/finish.

I agree with you there. It doesn't look like there's enough communication between the various sub-divisions within Windows Live, or much thought going into it.

Windows Live has potential, if it's done properly.

Microsoft have good ideas here, just the project mangers appear to lack that edge to make good software. Windows Live is one step forward and two steps back.

RE: WLSuite Soon to be released, any other testers annoyed? by aNILEator on 09-07-2007 at 08:05 AM

As far as I see it, they're trying to advertise their new applications to a wider audience (almost everyone knows messenger but the majority of people would not know anything at all about windows live skydrive, photogallery or writer etc) the bundled installer is a good idea, but terrible implementation

Yes, I noticed that.

I can just say this: WL installer downloaded and installed Toolbar, Sign-in assistant, WL Mail and Messenger in at most 20 minutes on my computer. Check your computers' performance :P

I agree with Lukas. i've still not managed to get the installer to download the components properly. All it managed to download was the sign-in assistant (worked first time) and Messenger (after about 4 attempts). And that's on a Pentium 4 2.8GHz, 256 RAM XP Home SP2 machine with a 4Mb/s ADSL connection
RE: WLSuite Soon to be released, any other testers annoyed? by ahmetgns on 09-07-2007 at 05:48 PM

Come ooon, if that installer worked with a normal speed on your computers, what would your opinion be about it then? Would you like it? If I were Microsoft, I would do the same thing, promote all my new Live products set when people wanted to install one of them?

It doesn't force any programs upon you except Sign-in assistant.

The installer speed wasn't an issue for me really. In fact I find it annoying all the time Microsoft asked me if I wanted MSN.com as my homepage (which was checked each time).

RE: WLSuite Soon to be released, any other testers annoyed? by RebelSean on 09-09-2007 at 08:11 AM

I agree 100% that the beta testers should have received more betas before the final release of the Suite. However, there has been a TON of internal testing being done. I don't quite think that the WLSuite will be released as the final version, and do expect a few builds comming in October for quite a few WL products. Specifically Gallery and Messenger.

Hopefully, with the amount of feedback their getting from the few releases they've had, they are going to fix and correct a lot of things.

RE: WLSuite Soon to be released, any other testers annoyed? by vaccination on 09-09-2007 at 08:16 AM

Well the latest messenger release it's still a beta, even though it's been stripped of beta tags. So that's 2 betas..

Strikes me they're just trying to push unfinished products out the door...

RE: WLSuite Soon to be released, any other testers annoyed? by absorbation on 09-09-2007 at 09:42 AM

Microsoft release betas now to gain attention to a product or service. The majority of testing is done by the developers themselves, which is one of the most disastrous decisitions when millions of users use their software.

I remember when MSN Messenger 7.0 was in beta, there was so many builds released to testers and only a minority were leaked.

If Patchou released a couple of betas to testers there would be a lot more bugs.
