Deleting Contacts' DP ? by JasonCMK on 09-22-2007 at 03:34 PM

Hello,
I have got two questions for u guys.
IPGet seems to get one's ip when u download his DP onto ur computer.
So, I would like to know how I can delete contacts' DPs from my computer, and whether it is possible to get their ips when I redownload them onto my computer by clicking on their avatars.
Thank you very much!

This is the folder you're looking for:

C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Temp\MessengerCache

Thanks for the reply. It worked in WLM 8.5.

But after I have upgraded WLM to 9.0, I cant find the "MessengerCache" folder anywhere.
Could anyone help, please?

Thanks very much!

I don't think you can get the ip that way, only with file transfers....maybe im wrong

RE: Deleting Contacts' DP ? by JasonCMK on 12-25-2007 at 03:31 PM

But it worked for me most of the time.
All I did was deleting the cached display pictures of other ppl.
Then when their DPs are downloaded, their ips are recorded.
Correct me if Im wrong.
But it actually worked for me till I changed to WLM 9.0.
It doesnt work for me now because I cant find the messenger cache folder anymore!!

Please help.
Thank you.

If the messenger's own option "This is a shared computer, don't store my address book etc. here" unticked, your cache must be deleted including all names, psms and dps. After unticking it, you may have to signout and re sign in, I am not sure.

Thanks for reply but that option is already unticked.

You might have to click "Forget Me" before you sign in and it should theoretically delete all your info and your contact cache

I think I know what you mean.
I will have a try on this.

Thanks.

Can it be because that option is already unticked?

I don't think so, because in the confirmation window which pops-up when you press "Forget me", it says "You are about to delete your Windows Live Messenger sign-in information from this computer. These can be readded later. Are you sure you want to do this?". So theoretically it will delete only your info, not cache. I even tested this and the dps were still there after I deleted my info.

It can add it again the same way it got it the first time.... by downloading it from the server when you sign in ^o) If you tell it to forget you, it does

But DP's are not stored on the server, though they are stored now but you can't get them directly from the server, you still retrive them from directly contacts when they are online.

Thanks for your replys.

Yeah, the DPs are retrieved directly from the contacts. That's how I get their IPs.

But I wonder whether your "MessengerCache" folder still exists with WLM 9.0?

If that option is unticked it means that it SHOULD STORE all the data on the local computer, not the other way around.
So, since he has that option unticked, he SHOULD be able to find the cache folder

 x2

Thank you CookieRevised, I didn't think thoroughly while posting that message. You are right  x3

I think they should still exist. But wlm 9.0 may have defined its cache folders as "Protected operating system folders" like Internet Explorer 7 defines its Temporary Internet Files like that (I used to go that folder by browsing folders with Windows Explorer but after IE7 I had to enable "Show protected operating system folders" option from Folder Options to access it, though I am not sure about this). Can you try enabling that option (Tools>Folder Options for XP) before looking for Cache folder?

I have tried this but the folder is still found nowhere.
