Is Msn for everyone? by francoisch on 09-27-2007 at 10:41 AM

hello

Among young persons, everyone notices whenever someone else offers to start a Msn conversation: blinking, sounds, popup...

Among old persons, almost no one wound notice any of the very tiny signs Msn sends.

I am still strugling to find a working solution to send out to my 89 year old mother some quite visible sign, like automatically opening the conversation window.

Someone kindly offered me earlier on a script to do that which happens to be not working in my case, for some unknown reason.

Would anyone have a solution which would do this: open the conversation window when someone offers to start a conversation?

Or the expertise to debug the script I was provided with?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Francois

You could always just make a script which pops up a large message on the screen stating that someone has sent you a message.

I think the better option would be to use Plus! toasts for notification, but modify the xml containing the toast interfaces so that the toasts are larger (if you really want you can make it bigger than the screen, but i think that's pushing it a little too far).  Personally I'm not sure which DLL you would need to reshack or where abouts it is or even where to put it afterwards and feel it would be best if someone else answered that part, but I can inform you that it is possible to give larger toasts by editting a file, you'll just have to wait for someone else to help you out with what exactly to do.

MsgPlusLiveRes.dll > INTERFACES > INTERFACE3 > 0

The two toast windows which you would change in the above mentioned interface file have the following IDs:
- ToastPopupGeneric
- ToastPopupContact

From what I can see you can change the window size and font size (as needed) but I have not personally tested it.

EDIT: Currently testing it

If somebody wants to do this... It's MsgPlusLiveRes.DLL > Interfaces > Interface3

Attached edited resource file, but too busy at the moment to explain how to replace it - if someone else could help out then thanks.

hello everyone and thank you for your interesting answers.

I have to go for few days, so I will be quiet, but I will work on these upon return.

Yes, I could go with any solution which would be very visible, like a large popup, a toast, ...

My prefered solution, though, would go to opening the conversation window to avoid counting on my old person to open it herself.

If feasible.

Thank you all.

hello

I just looked into the starting solution which was posted earlier.

With my no-skills situation into this technical domain, I just gathered taht:
- MsgPlusLiveRes.dll sits into the Msg+ directory
- there is an Interface directory, empty
to tell what my skill level is, that's all I get.

Woul anyone be so kind to explain to a beginner how to implement what has been described?

Should / could I set up this as a Script?

Thank you in advance for your help.

hello

Well, I still have the same need of being able to make open the conversation window on my 89 old mother side, since she does not notice sounds and pop-ups when I try to start a conversation with her.

I am sorry to say that I don't have the skills and knowledge to work on a solution.

To reinforce my request, I would just point out that this is quite a general need, not a specific personnal need.

Thank you in advance to anyone who would look into his.
