So, Gmail has jumped into the 3GB range, trailing in 3rd place so far in terms of storage behind Windows Live Hotmail (5GB) and Yahoo Mail (Unlimited Storage).  I personally don't understand how someone could be storing close to 3GB of email messages in the what, 3 or so years that Gmail has been operating. I'm only using 7%.

Well, maybe people are taking advantage of it with Gmail Shell Extension. Let's you file host with the store amount :p.

Where did you read that. I just checked that my account got 3 GB storage.

RE: Gmail now has 3GB of Storage! by Nagamasa on 10-13-2007 at 07:21 PM

I personally like Yahoo! Mail,

* because of my hispeed provider, Rogers Yahoo!
* Nice interface, especially how the ads are on the side (small windows =(Y))

But then, when if Gmail surpasses Yahoo! in awesomeness, I'll think of switching over.

We're supposed to have 6 GB by January.

I'm surprised "GMail Drive" isn't against the GMail terms of service. O_o

It seems like a really hackish and unreliable way to back up large files though... the max attachment size is 20 MB, and some users have had their accounts temporarily disabled for uploading too much. :p

Last time I checked it was 10 MB. I backup all my projects and stuff to my GMail account, but if they're too big, I'll split them up. It's not really unreliable, it works.

You are currently using 460 MB (10%) of your 3109 MB.

The biggest attachment I have in there is 4mb... I don't use GMail drive.

I've just never deleted any emails. :)

RE: Gmail now has 3GB of Storage! by Nathan on 10-14-2007 at 11:20 AM

You are currently using 128 MB (4%) of your 3065 MB.

I never delete any emails neither lol

"You are currently using 204 MB (6%) of your 3225 MB."

I'm not using close to 3 GB, but over time, my percentage used is increasing (used to be around 2 percent and crept up slowly). So I'm using space faster than the limit is increasing, and if it continues, then I will fill up my account.

Since when has Hotmail been 5 GB? I thought that it was only 250 MB :$.

RE: Gmail now has 3GB of Storage! by joey on 10-15-2007 at 11:13 AM

hotmail's shit anyway, cant use pop or forward to another email address for free :dodgy:

googlemail ftw! [not gmail, some twat already took the name apparently]

RE: Gmail now has 3GB of Storage! by trini on 10-15-2007 at 12:07 PM

"You are currently using 1351 MB (42%) of your 3242 MB."

That's with 3 years usage :P

My mom got an account from me a couple of years ago, and only in the last six months she has nearly filled over half of the storage. She's not using it to store anything, she just keeps getting and sending those ridiculous large chains... ¬¬

So, yeah, it's not impossible to be a "normal" user and fill your 2GB account. I'm glad they're upgrading it to 3GB, I won't have to go and clean up the mess she has in her account. :P

RE: Gmail now has 3GB of Storage! by absorbation on 10-15-2007 at 07:30 PM

I hardly use any storage, and I doubt many people do. Who here actually does backups of personal files on Google servers?

RE: Gmail now has 3GB of Storage! by Dane on 10-15-2007 at 07:32 PM

On October 23rd, 2007, all Gmail accounts will be given ANOTHER Gigabyte of storage, adding up to 4.3GB.  And on January 4th 2008, ANOTHER 2 GIGABYTES of storage will be added, upping it to 6.2GB.  Additionally, Gmail will get 3.3MB per day.

Is the Google Mail name being used instead of Gmail in the UK only or other regions as well?

Gmail, officially Google Mail in Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom

RE: Gmail now has 3GB of Storage! by rav0 on 10-15-2007 at 11:19 PM

Oh OK, I see... lots fo people were talking about the new name in this thread. I have a cross of both, my Gmail says Gmail but the help centre says Google Mail because I set the language to English (UK) because Gmail doesn't let you change date formats.

RE: Gmail now has 3GB of Storage! by Nathan on 10-16-2007 at 12:08 PM

I don't know if this is true/or still works, but if you get a proxy thats in the US then you should be able to get a gmail.com email :)

RE: Gmail now has 3GB of Storage! by rav0 on 10-16-2007 at 02:32 PM

That should work properly. You can also get somebody else to sign up for you (they create the account then you take it).
