Freezes on external emoticons by Croakie on 10-27-2007 at 09:07 AM

Hello !

I found no trace (or then no solution) to the problem that's been bugging me for months.
Very often when some contact sends me an animated emoticon, messengerlive freezes for about 10 seconds before the window finally comes up (if it's in the taskbar) or before I can type anything in it.

The rest of the pc is still running normally.
It seems I'm the only one of my contacts to have to put with this, so it must be a setting or maybe even a hardware/software problem.
As I recall, it started with version 8.0.

I have Plus! installed too but I don't know if there's any link with it.

Anyone got an idea?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like it's freezing while downloading that custom emoticon. How big is the file in question?

I don't know exactly. I can only find a fixed image of the (normally animated) emoticon, so it's 1 or 2 kb only.

You may be right : it seems to only occur when the icon is downloading.

But then, why does it do it 10 times in a row with the same emoticon it just received ?
Also it doesn't seem to be doing it with everyone (but then maybe not everyone sends big emoticons).

I have to check all these points but it would really seem odd to me that any emoticon (even if one or two hundred kb big which I'm sure must be the max) should be able to totally freeze msn for nearly 10 full seconds !

I don't get it.
I'm going to try a few things and get back to you.

Thanks !

does this happen with file-transfers too?

look in: Messenger Options > Connection

it should say something like "You are connected through [...]"
