[Suggestion] Local Alias? by andrewdodd13 on 10-27-2007 at 11:15 PM

I was playing about with Pidgin on Linux earlier, and I came across this semi-neat feature: You could set your "Local Alias" which basically appears any time you say anything.

So like, my "Local Alias" would be "Andrew:" and in my chat window / log it'd just say "Andrew says:" rather than "Andrew - <Some random song lyric> says:".

This'd be a nice addition to Plus!, imo. (Although I'm just wondering how it'd be implemented... It's maybe not possible, even just for logging, due to the way MSN works, huh?)

I believe Stuffplug has this feature, its called the Convo Name (not 100% sure as im not using Stuffplug atm but its prolly close to that) this replaces your full name with whatever is in that box. so you could download stuffplug and use that feature if you wanted to.

hope this was helpful :)

ok,

name is "Bill - <Song Title/Lyrics Here>"

then in the conversation instead of it being really long with the song title/lyrics it can be made something like "Bill"

Thanks, so what he needs is something to edit or make it shorter?

ok ill try again, Stuffplug is an extension to Msn just like MP!L. you need to download stuffplug 3 (this version wont work for msn 8.5, if you have 8.5 either downgrade to 8.1 or wait for the new stuffplug) after downloading and installing Stuffplug you look in the Options or Settings. in the Conversations tab there should be an option thats called "convo name" or "talk/chat only name" (again im not 100% sure on this name but it will be similar) in this you write a name or "local alis" or whatever you like to call it and save your settings. now when you chat to someone only that "alias" will be shown instead of your full name.

you can download stuffplug at www.stuffplug.com

Got it on there, thanks. But it'd still be quite useful on MP!L...

andrewdodd13's suggestion already exist on another add-on, so Patchou may not want to implement it to Plus! also. But I wanted to mention something which I discovered nowadays in this thread, because it is somehow related to this subject.

I noticed that, if some Name tag has been added at the end of display name with a Personal status, Plus! doesn't include that tag to the contact's name. You can check it by going to Contact Info window of one of your contacts' who have set a Personal status with a name tag, you know it is seen like this: ahmetgns (at dinner) , you can't see that tag at contact info window. And similarly if you send the name to your contacts by using Special Plus! tag (!N) or (!NP), it doesn't include that tag. So here is my suggestion:

In the chat window, Plus! shall not include that tag to the convo, I mean instead of

ahmetgns (at dinner) says:

it shall say only

ahmetgns says:

I know what you want, just add yourself to your contact list and get yourself a custom name :p
does the job nicely.

You are aware that it won't change the look on your contacts' chat windows, aren't you? ;) But andrew already said "Local", so there must be no problem for andrew.

MessengerDiscovery has this feature. It should also show on the receiver's side, but it's breaking up in 8.5...as for chat logging...I doubt it.

RE: [Suggestion] Local Alias? by andrewdodd13 on 10-29-2007 at 04:53 PM

It works in chat logging, but not when the full name is used (of course, it does that for all my contacts ;)).

Par example,

code:
[00:03:17] Annie: but dont say anything though
[00:03:20] Annie: bleh
[00:03:26] Annie: why do i keep telling you things
[00:03:32] Andrew: cause yer dumb? :P

I don't need it to show up on other people's machines.. that's actually the whole point - if I wanted it to show up for other people... I'd change my name? :P

A procedure is local if completion of the procedure depends only on the local executing process.
