Mouse problem with computer by Oxy on 11-01-2007 at 07:27 PM

I got a call off a friend, and she was having problems with her mouse..
It started when she booted up, and tried to open Internet Explorer. Apparently, her description was that the mouse wouldn't click anywhere (i assume she can move the cursor). It seems as if she can't click on any icons with effect, and it started when she booted up one day.
Any ideas on how to fix? (bear in mind she's female, and hasn't got a clue about computers)

EDIT: i think it's a regular plug&play mouse

Thanks loads.

tried reinstalling IE? or has she tried using firefox?
Or cant she click anywhere at all, not even on desktop, cos if its just IE that she cant click, then theres no problem with mouse

Is it connected via USB or PS/2? Try plugging it into the type of port it currently isn't (if that makes sense).

It only has a ps2 connector.

Have you tried the mouse on another computer?
It sounds like a problem with the computer instead of the mouse.

In the mouse properties (control panel > mouse) at what speed is the double click set at? If it is too fast try lowering it.

I had this problem years ago and found one of my younger brothers touched this setting making double clicking programs nearly impossible.

Firstly, can she execute things with the keyboard? alt+ctrl+delete? maybe check the processes to see what's going on (might be best if you do that). Assuming that she can't do things like bring up the start menu, alt+ctrl+delete or cycle through the windows then the rest of this post applies....

To me it sounds as though the computer froze and continues to freeze because of IE.  The problem being caused when booting might be from some application trying to access the internet through the IE stuff (like how we use the activeX object in scripts).  I think you should look at checking for any malicious software that may cause this problem and also to try reinstalling IE to see if that fixes it (the latter is the easiest and quickest so go for that first).
