BSOD on startup URGENT by Nathan on 11-11-2007 at 10:36 AM

Hi,
I use my laptop everyday and one day i turned it on in the morning and it gave me the usual list "ubuntu, or windows" and I clicked on windows - as i usually do. And it then proceeded to give me a BSOD with the error "Unmountable Boot Volume" It then restarts and goes into a loop.

My theory is that linux has messed with the boot.ini or something and it now doesnt work.

Does anybody know a way I can fix it without formatting.

Thanks

put in your windows CD and get it to run a chkdsk on it. Seemed to work for me when I had a BSOD on startup.

Yeah I planned to do that, problem is i am at school and don't have access to one. Does anyone know a way without using a cd?

http://bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

use a floopy to make a win98 boot disk, boot up to command prompt, andrun a chkdsk

ouch, umm, it might work if you use flash drive, if you have one, in thory, haven't tested it though

You might be able to make a CD-ROM boot disk instead of a floppy. If not, you could try to borrow a Windows CD or download one if you can at school.

I have fixed it :) I got a windows cd off the tecky and it works, but its going really slow and it will only allow me the windows classic theme and it wont allow me to choose any others?
any ideas why?!

Thanks.

The thing with the Windows Classic theme should be caused by the lack of vga drivers (?)

It also could be a slipstreamed disk.

Nope all of my drivers are  installed - i fixed the theme thing by installing the crystal blue one that windows media center uses
