Are you using Messenger Discovery? If yes, uninstall it and try again. It terribly slows down your download/upload speed.

File transfer depends on various things.

1) Your modem/router does not support UPNP (Universal Plug and Play) and is unable to open the required ports for a Peer-to-Peer transfer, so you're file is transferred via a relay.

2) The person who you are sending to does not have a proper modem/router config or does not have UPNP. Same as above, but then seen from the other side.

3) Your firewall / the firewall on the other side is set to restrictive, disallowing the direct traffic..

Sometimes filetransfers are just.. slow, even when the things I've mentioned are all okay.

You're also limited with the contacts' connection speed to whom you are trying to send files. Remember it. For example, you may have a very fast internet, but if your contact connects to the net with 56K fax modem, you can upload only with a ~55 Kbps(~7KB/s) speed.
