New WLM 9,0 supports .gif? by Jimbo on 11-23-2007 at 07:03 AM

Is it true that WLM 9.0 now supports .gif animations?
Wont this make WLM slow down, will there be a size restricton?

of course there will be a size restriction, and it wont slow WLM down too much really just think about it being 1 slightly larger emoticon.

but i dont really know if it is true that it does have it... though i think it will

Mess.be has it on the new features list but i havent seen it anywhere else, and cool.
But if it loads them all on startup of wlm, and every one of your contacts has one, then it obv will slow it down, no?

These are pre-emptive questions.  The build has not yet been released, and it will be an alpha, so no one can know for sure.  It is a feature, Yes.  Thats the extent of knowledge.

you dont load everyones DP's on load... well only if you have them all in your cache =\

I can't see it slowing down messenger much, it's only going to load them for the contacts you're speaking to and then cache them. It's the same as loading a .gif avatar on the forums, it doesn't lag your internet browser does it.

I'm sure there are going to be auto restrictions on the likes of DP.  Kind of like how our current ones get cut down and transformed into PNG, the new ones would probably have a limitted frame rate and dimentions.

As has been previously stated, this feature might be discontinued, all you have to do is look back at 8.1 B1 and see that they got rid of the Live and Local feature.

well, lets hope that its not discontinued and gif animated display pictures are added :)

Hmm, I don't think they will be able to see them because that is a feature of 9.0, not 8.1/8.5 .  Maybe in later builds, MS may make it compatible so that an 8.x user can see 9.x's person animated gif.

No, not moving

I could have my duck forum avatar as my Windows Live messenger Display picture and it'll move :cheesy:

it does support gif animations - there are even a few included in the install package. They must be smaller than 200 kb to work however and are only viewable by other beta testers. Those who are not beta testers only see the first frame of the animation - and NO, there is no slowdown at all ;)
