Aargh! Windows not loading! by rob_botch on 12-03-2007 at 06:12 PM

Hi

I'm having serious problems with my computer. When I turn the computer on as normal, the Windows flag appears, but after the little blue loading bars have moved across the screen twice, the screen flashes for a fraction of a second onto what appears to be a blue screen of death, and then restarts.

I am currently using a dual-booted Ubuntu distro on the same computer without problems, but the NTFS partition appears unreadable. This is where Windows is installed.

Does anybody have any ideas of how to salvage the computer, or, failing that, my data?

Thank you

Robert

When your BSOD appears  whats the error codes you get?

I'm not sure, it appeared too quickly to read. I tried photographing it to read it, but it was too quick for me!

I'll give it another go. It was a short message, certainly.

OK, status update (sorry for double post)

I have managed to film the loading sequence. No error code is given, just a fairly generic message:

quote:
Windows XP
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you have seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If the screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /R to check for hard disk corruption.

I have no XP instal disk, just a manufacturer reset disk. I downloaded a recovery console. CHKDSK /R simply returns the ominous message "One or more partitions has been detected to have unrecoverable errors." I hope this doesn't mean what I think it means. I am, however, easily running Ubuntu from the same hard disk, so perhaps it isn't a hardware problem?

Looks like you may need to re-install your OS

Yeah, sorry mate. Hold on i will have another look.

Are you sure that there is no error description or any error code?

To make the BSOD stay, tap your F8 key before the windows logo appears and select "Disable automatic restart on system failure" (or something like that).
That should allow you to see the BSOD.

I'm sure that's all. I've videoed the whole thing. I can't attach it here, but that was all it said. I think a reinstall is the way it's looking... thanks for your help.

o when loading up windows press F8. this will take you into some options such as run in safe mode and stuff. firstly DISABLE "restart on windows failure" or something like that (not sure of the exact words), then this should stop your computer automatically restarting in theory i think. anyway now u can get us the error code if one exists OR u can try bootin up in safe mode or the mode where to your last working settings .
hope i helped:)

Can you get in to safe mode?

You may also want to try to repair XP

OK, I went the whole way and reinstalled Windows XP from recovery CD. However, all is not quite well. Nothing seems to want to be installed, and the computer won't even recognize my graphics card type or allow me to install drivers. Any ideas?

RE: Aargh! Windows not loading! by YourNeibour on 12-06-2007 at 07:32 PM

What kind of errors are you getting when you try to install the drivers?

Woah...change of post there...

I see you reinstalled.

You may have incorrect drivers.
To find out what equipment your PC is running, download a free tool called "Belarc Advisor" from www.belarc.com

go to the video card section, and find the model you are running. Copy it into google, and type XP Driver after that.

Find one, then install them
