YAY 50 New Stop Motion Animations by me. +20 second piece by aNILEator on 12-08-2007 at 08:18 AM

Here's what I've been working on at University since I started.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uw2YX0SFGUw

The Principles of Animation.

50 Short exercises to improve your learning, understanding and application of Stop-Motion Animation.

You may notice a familiar friend ;) he died during filming, I saved the head though.

I still have a 20 second piece left to do before Monday, so there'll be another one up there soon I guess.

20 Second Piece http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7E8_XOvJFxU

Enjoy :)

Well done, pretty entertaining. You seem to have put a lot of work on this.

RE: YAY New Animations by CookieRevised on 12-08-2007 at 08:31 AM

Wow, you did all those? Awesome indeed....

And is it just me or have your skills improved a lot?

(y)(y)

RE: YAY New Animations by aNILEator on 12-08-2007 at 08:41 AM

You be the judge, I disabled frame blending too, so it's per frame, shouldn't be any blurring/much present I don't think. So in essence whatever is there, is whatever I filmed, rather than some smoothing by video editor

After about a week of 'getting back into it' as it'd been months since I'd last animated and learning how the uni armatures work best I think I improved greatly yes.

My favourites are Creeping, Tightrope walk and lifting a heavy weight.

I'll post a full list of requirements shortly

Yeah I did :) there's a few I'm not exactly happy with but they'll do

It's hard to judge effort v quality though, because members of my class put a lot of effort in (whereas I put effort in but I know how it works/works in theory and can imagine how many frames I'll need to do what I want), but their animations aren't as good quality as mine

Not meaning to sound big headed/hurtful at all with that statement, someone's laugh is way better than mine for example, but most people seemed to fail to grasp 24 Frames Per Second = 24 photos are needed, some worked on 2's {doubling up frames} but then some people also kept changing the playback speed too, which although slows down/speeds up the animation to look better whilst playing, doesn't help the actual taken photos look any better when exporting (does anyone understand me *-)?)

I can see that they've improved as time went on however so maybe once they've grasped editing they'll have it looking good.

I have still have lots to do, will be a big struggle for me to finish it.

Watching that, memories of watching some kids shows using that technique and wondering "how on earth do they do that?". Pro stuff, keep it up

It's such a brilliant medium to work in. Ever since I first saw Wallace and Gromit I wanted to do it.

It truly can create a magical feel and leave you asking questions as you yourself said.

I think it's a real shame there's more and more CG animated TV Shows pushed to kids these day, the magic is out of it because everyone knows it's not real and anything and everything can be done with it these days. Sure I've enjoyed and respected a few, the more creative ones usually (I have no problem with CG Films). But in general I don't care much for CG or anime TV shows for kids.

I think you/kids can't relate to it which makes a big difference. People can, will and do go on forever about old cartoons and can relate to others with them too, I've met people in their adulthood who still wondered how clangers was made!

I'll make an example using "Button Moon" a very cheap puppet production where most of the characters and models were made from Kitchen Utensils Mr. Spoon being the main character, had a rocketship clearly made from a Heinz baked Beans tin simple stuff that most kids could relate too, not that I'm saying kids shows needs to be cheap and made with bean tins but it was very popular at the time (and I've seen some Button moon T-shirts about too).

There are timeless classics like Bagpuss and Old Bear Stories that used toys as their characters, something all kids of all ages have and love.

I found a good list of old and new stop-motion animations on Toonhound.com

RE: YAY 50 New Stop Motion Animations by me by aNILEator on 12-10-2007 at 06:12 PM

Gumby is an American thing, all the list i gave are from British animation studios I think :) (and I just copy pasted it from toonhound anyway :P) I'll post the 20 second animation online when I get home :)

Because thunderbirds wasn't made with plasticine type stuff?

I imagine you'd just use a string or some sort of stand to hold it in place 8-)
RE: YAY 50 New Stop Motion Animations by me by aNILEator on 12-11-2007 at 07:31 AM

we used a fishing wire attached to a bar with some pins, overhead of the set then we could adjust the pins to adjust height and position, to simulate in the air stuff

PS: Youtube is still performing maintenance and i can't upload this >> http://nile.zerogen.net/videos/20seconds.wmv

RE: YAY 50 New Stop Motion Animations by me by kezz on 12-11-2007 at 09:20 AM

Wow! Brilliant. Hope you get top marks for that, really quality stuff.
Do you write a 'script' or storyboard or something? or is it completely spontaneous?

RE: YAY 50 New Stop Motion Animations by me by aNILEator on 12-11-2007 at 12:16 PM

that one was quite spontaneous :P

I did have a planned one out but I was under pressure to get it done VERY quickly so I just did whatever seemed to fit my mood/actions :P

originally he was going to trip over something and then pick it up and throw it away

and on this one I was going to have him just throw it away too till I saw it was so mushed into his hand that it wouldn't come off so I started flapping it about and it kinda came off a bit so I just thought ooo what if it splats all over him :D

BTW youtubed 20 second one now http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7E8_XOvJFxU

:)
