Infected with a windows live messenger virus? READ! by Quantum on 12-09-2007 at 04:33 PM

Ok, i was bored so i made this.

I think i have a virus or a bot infecting my messenger!

1.0 How do I know if i have a virus or a bot accessing my account or messenger?

If you think theres a bot accessing your account or infected onto your windows live messenger you must see some sort of sign. It is a virus or a spyware bot if:

1. Your getting advertisements via windows live messenger toasts.
2. Your sending links to other people when you are offline.
3. Your getting pop-ups et via windows live messenger (make shure its not the plus sponser. If it is and you want to get rid of it click here!)

1.2 How to get rid of the advertisement virus (pc related)

Well, if your getting advertisements from windows live messenger and your shure its not the plus sponsor also you are sending links to people when you are online heres what to do.

First of all log into hotmail and change your account password ans secret question.

Now you must remove all ad-ons for windows live messenger. Restart and log into windows live messenger. If its fixed yay!

If not you need to uninstall messenger by going to START>CONTROLPANEL>ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS>WINDOWS LIVE MESSENER. Once you have done that you need to have a look trough your program files and look for anything that looks dodgy or you didn't remember installing. If you see some, google it to see if its safe or not. If it is not remove it :) but please post it here first. Once you have done that restart.

Now you need to download anti-virus and spyware cleaners. Run them on your machine and if they detect anything bad delete the files as soon as possible. Now restart and boot in safe mode and the same as you just did and rescan your pc.

1.3 People are saying that i am sending them links when i wasn't even online!

Most of the timer all you need to do is login to hotmail and change your password and your secret question. Once you have done this that should be it. If it happens again you may have a keylogger on your pc.

1.4 How can I prevent this from happing again?

Don't give your password to websites that says that they can tell you who unblocked you. In fact don't give anyone or anything your password. If you do they go on your account and end links and advertise to your contacts. Also don't except files that people are sending you unless you scan them with an anti virus first.

Infact don't
5) You should be telling them to search Google to see if its safe, not us.
6) Tell them not to accept strange files or visit strange links, always ask them before accepting or visiting.
3) Post this in the right forum.

Good intentions.....nice job, i've had quite a few people asking me about these recently!

Just a quick note, the avast link has a semi-colon instead of a colon and so doesn't work :)

Where's step 1.1? :P

Also: it's sure not shure and names of things (e.g. Plus, Hotmail etc) should be capitalised  ;)

First thing I noticed

Also the advice is questionable in places.

Eg the I'm sending links out to people one.

That is more commonly the cause of a worm/virus rather than a keylogger or dodgy block checker site taking your password

I still highly question your intelligence you claimed to be a 21 year old English man, then you should know how to spell most simple words correctly and phrase sentences decently. I mean ffs "shure" isn't even a word

to be fair, i know quite a few people who have recently been hit by one like this, claiming to be a block checker, logging their password and then signing in, auto-sending out links to all their contacts (of which some have then gone on to fall for the trap) and then signing out again

while it's not 100% accurate, it's trying to cover all eventualities and either way, the "change your password" advice which is given first off is the best way to combat these kind of things

Please sticky it if possible.

Viruses are always on the loose! Weather its from files you downloaded from a site or your friends sent it to you via messenger, it's a big problem.

There are a few things you can do such as always confirm that your contact sent it to you and it wasn't an automated message. Also make sure you have a good anti-virus that's always updated. Never give out your password to a third party site.

Here are some free anti-viruses that you can download (in no particular order).
Please note you should only have one resident anti-virus program

Or try either of these free online scanners
All are Free.

Remember the best virus defence is common sense and always check with your contact!

Search the forums!

Do you have an anti-virus scanner? If not download a full program from the first list. If you do have an anti-virus update then run it or use from the second list.

A combination of 2 programs from the third list and 1 from the top list should be sufficient to remove the virus and protect the computer in the future.

I posted this ages ago btw. But I just updated it now.

Most of the people who regularly use this forum would be smart enough not to infect themselves with an 'msn virus' as such. Those who come looking for help would find this useful, but the majority of people who get these viruses know dick all about computers and are stereotypically MySpace (or other social networking site) whores, so to speak.

IMO, if your stupid enough to get it, you shouldn't be using the internet.

Example: (from my male cousin - 13 years of age): 'Here's a new online photo album i've just made. Click (here) to see the piccies. Might be a few nudes ;)'

I mean, come on people, common sense.
