[Help] Can WLM 8.5 use Full Transparnt Windows? by Nurgle on 12-16-2007 at 06:01 PM

hi there im new to the forums.

i started to skin this morning using the tut, and managed to replace a file with another.

my aim was to get something like this:

http://dantaylor17.deviantart.com/art/Windows-Liv...r-Concept-60231911

so, i thought, lets use Windows Vista Aero.mmstyle file to look for the streams used in windows Glass Aero.

extracted that file and put it into the skin.

it turned out like this (look at screenshot).

my question is,  "is it possible to skin messenger to look like the concept?"

Many Thanks In Advance

- James.

why not just actually use glass instead of a transparent PNG :p

IE and WMP don't get glass by just setting their backgrounds to semi-transparent PNGs...

They relily on their own recorces in their own folder?.

so if i was to make i clean transparent .jpeg in photoshop it could work?

Ignore shawnz he somehow thinks that we can re-code messenger completely with the skinning interface. He fails to admit he's wrong and fails to show a working example proving why we're wrong.

Currently it's not possible to get transparant aero glass effects woth messenger or the skinning engine, sorry

if you look closely, the background is visible through the window. it's not perfect, but i'm working on it.

I Knew that. just didn't know it was called api.

You showed me a sort of transparent wlm form.

if it gets any better, then show me.

lol if you are trying to force glass on WLM shawnz then good luck. TheSteve tried this months ago and found that there is no way of getting somewhere.

All you can ever get is glass on expanded window mode, and you can't control what element it happens to. Everything becomes transparent and all you get is this big ugly mess.

Heres a screenshot of it when we were testing it out on Ev0 back in WLM 8.1 and you can see its pretty much what you have right now.

Ill say it once and and ill say it again. Glass will not be possible until Microsoft puts it in themselves.

Believe me several people have tried and all of them have failed.

So it would be possible if Microsoft put it in

I hope this will stop people asking now there is proof that it can't really be done fully

MS will no doubt put glass in one day, but on terms of being able to control it.......well thats anyones guess. Again we have to wait until MS implements glass in Windows Live Messenger then we can talk about it.

I remember that windows live mail (desktop, beta) was a bit of transparency on toolbar... is this nothing about the UIFiles code?

No :P I tried that too.

Whether or not WLMD uses Aero is written into the WLMD program itself. Because WLM does not have this yet thats why its not possible.

Crazy thought but...

Does anyone know of the program called foobar2000? It's a media player that allows plugin support. One such plugin is called foo_panels_ui.dll. It can do allll sorts of things to the GUI of the program. One of the things it can do is manipulate vista glass. Vista glass is NOT built into foobar2000 at all, only in the plugin panels ui. It can be actived with $glass(x,y,w,h) or something like that.

Panels UI

So, perhaps through the add-ons feature of WLM (or the scripting engine?), a plugin could be made to achieve the glass effect you seem to want.

This may be helpful, I don't know:

Extend Glass Frame Into A WPF App

Just thinking. It would only work on vista machines obviously, but it would be cool ^_^.

that's what we're doing. see the two screenshots above.

Oh, didn't know you guys made something to enable real glass in WLM. Oh well, it'd be cool, but I guess not possible.
RE: [Help] Can WLM 8.5 use Full Transparnt Windows? by Willz on 12-17-2007 at 03:13 AM

Well there seemed to be no real way of controlling it so we saw there was no point to continue, plus since we saw Windows Live Mail Desktop implement we figured MS wouldn't be too far away from doing it themselves.
