[RESOLVED] WMA or M4A? by kezz on 12-26-2007 at 03:01 AM

Which type of file would produce better sound quality?

RE: WMA or MP4? by ShawnZ on 12-26-2007 at 04:57 AM

MP4 doesn't produce any sound quality, MP4 doesn't compress audio...

I'm referring to .mp4 or .wma audio files...
Which is better quality

I only use MP4 for a video format since it's the only format that is supported by my iPod. other than that, for music, I personally use MP3's.

Apologies, I meant to type M4A, not MP4

So now the question: m4a or wma?

m4a is only a filename extension invented by Apple for MP4 files. m4a is not a filetype or codec

I take it you mean AAC audio (inside of an MP4 container) versus Windows Media Audio (WMA).

AAC compresses sound better than WMA, and is also more compatible.

MP3 compares to AAC fairly well at higher bitrates, and is more widely supported than AAC or WMA. It also often consumes less power, so sueful for portable players. It's worth considering if you can use it and won't need tiny bitrates.

It's hardly important.

If you have an iPod, use MP3AAC (M4A), if you don't care, use whatever you want. At 128kbps, there's little difference (as far as I can tell, and my hearing is fairly decent) between them. MP3 isn't really any good below 160kbps.

If you're going for high bit-rates I'd take MP3 for the reason rav0 gave - it uses less power.
