Custom emoticons issue by StardustPT on 01-02-2008 at 07:34 PM

OK, I've got this really weird problem. Recently I formatted my PC and used MSN BackUp to store all my custom emoticons, then I used it again to restore them to WLM. Thing is, no one can add any of my emoticons, they're just getting the gray faded option Get this Emoticon... instead of Add...
Is this because I've stored them for backup and somehow became "protected"?

yeah probably, i'm not sure there is an easy way to undo it... you can re-add the files manually by yourself and then they will be unprotected again

I can't add them myself either, just the same as my contacts. Are the emoticons stored somewhere else? That way maybe I could do something from there.

no, i meant you should add your emoticons into messenger using the original gif files, unless you mean you dont have the emoticons, then you can extract each emoticon with the backup wizard tool, which you can download from here

Nice! That sure worked. I had to add all of them one by one, which took me a couple of hours, but all my contacts can now add any custom emoticons I have.
I guess using MSN BackUp isn't such a good idea if you want your friends to be able to add your stuff.

Thanks a lot! :D

no problem, glad it helped... you're such a good friend for spending a couple of hours fixing it for your friends ;) :D

It's because by using MSN BackUp's method of installing the custom emoticons (i.e. as a pack), Messenger believes that you have purchased a pack of emoticons and hence does not let your contacts directly steal them through Right click > Add...
