Service Pack 3 Errors by Chris4 on 01-10-2008 at 06:35 PM

New update on Windows Update on my girlfriends PC, XP SP3.
So I go to install it then I get these errors...

quote:

---------------------------
Access is denied.

---------------------------
OK

Service Pack 3 Setup Error

Service Pack 3 installation did not complete.

Select 'OK' to undo the changes that have been made.

OK

Windows XP has been partially updated and may not work properly.

Windows XP SP2
Packard Bell
Intel Celeron 2.93GHz
448 MB of RAM

Tried installing latest Windows Installer.
Tried Googling but nothing much.

Any help?

Were there any updates you were supposed to install before hand from Windows Update to prep the system for the update? (I ask because you did for Vista's SP1)

though, I don't think this is the problem as the SP wouldn't of shown up in the list if the system wasn't ready for it *-) Also that wouldn't throw a 'Access is denied' error.

Any software installed that may be blocking it? (though..if it's windows update that's installing it I don't know why that'd happen =s)

Hmm. Well in the Windows Update that comes up on desktop it just tried to install SP3 directly. When I went to Windows Update website it installed something before but then I tried installing SP3 after but still got same errors. I can't think of anything that would be blocking it. She only has AVG Anti-Virus which won't block Windows Update. Hmm..

She is logged in with an Administrator account?

Generally, there should be debugging information on which file(s) access is denied to.

Also, SP3 isn't out yet unless you've enabled the Automatic Update hack to download the beta.

I would recommend against installing beta updates or servicepacks, especially on machines that are used for other things then testing.

Just my 2 cents...

I didn't use a hack. It appeared in Windows Update.

Okay thanks.
