Display name not changing - Printable Version

Hello all,

I have recently downloaded Messenger plus and the new msn 2008.

When I now change my display name, it changes in my main msn window where all of my contacts are, but when I start a conversation with somebody my display name has not changed and it is still my old one. The people who I am talking to are able to see my new name in the conversation window but I am not. Does anybody know why this might be and what I can do to change it?

Where is the wrong display name? In conversation windows' title, or in the Sent/Received messages section of the window? Or both?

Try deleting yourself from your contact list. I think you have added yourself.

If you are using an add-on which lets you create a custom "chat name" like StuffPlug then go into its options and disable that option.

Something simular happened to me the other week but it seemed to be ok once I turned my laptop off and on

I don't know. However something strange happened to me also while testing this issue.

While I have been using my new name for two days, I added myself to my contact list and the old name I used two days ago appeared in my contact list. I signed out and resigned in, then the new name came back to my contact list. I think it is a problem with contacts cache not being updated for yourself because your new name info isn't sent to yourself from servers. Yet I think if you delete cache, such a problem won't occur (or if you delete cache, you won't be able to see your display name, you'll see only your e-mail address). These are just my guesses, not the truth.

Yes, I did. I don't see any point to have myself in my contact list.

If you have yourself and you don't consider deleting yourself and if you think that is the cause of your problem, then tick this Messenger option "Tools>Options>Security>"This is a shared computer, don't store my address book, personal message and display picture here". This will prevent your computer from storing contacts cache. Also you can untick this option Options>General>"Use the same personal message and display picture everywhere I sign-in"

Adding yourself as a contact in WLM shouldn't incur a bug or any sort of problem, but the name won't update until you sign in and out again, or appear offline and go back to an online status. I'm guessing this means that when you add yourself, it creates a problem with the function in WLM that checks to see who is online.

I didn't have this problem. My nickname and PSM updated immediatly when I changed it.

@ahmetgns - Deleted myself and ticked/unticked those options.

No, it doesn't.

I will add myself again now, to check it.

EDIT: Just added myself but i'm not shown as online in my contacts list and I can't see my nick and PSM. Just my MSN address.
What to do?

I tried several times adding myself but it doesn't work. I've also signed out and signed in many times. Really don't know what to do...

There is something strange here. I added and after ten minutes deleted myself from my contact list yesterday. However myself remained in my Allow list. Today I changed my psm and when I checked my Allow list, I saw that new psm in my entry in Allow list. However I myself have never been in my contact list since yesterday and this psm is completely new. I think, Messenger reads the avaliable information from our pcs for ourselves and changes lists according to that info. So we better never add ourselves in our contact lists.

really, why do you add yourself?

Well, I generally can't see myself. After the day I deleted myself and added again the next day I'm always offline. 8-)

I think, you mix these two question words "who" and "how". Just move "w" to the end of the word

You have Messenger Plus! Live and you add colors&formatting to your psm, right? That is why you want to see how your name&psm look like? To learn it, checking your contact card window helps a bit. But if it is not sufficient, you can use (!NP) and (!MYPSM) tags of MsgPlus!. What you have to do to check your name and psm is just sending those tags to any contact, it may even be a Messenger bot which won't be annoyed with such messages

You got the point, sorry for the "who" and mixed up letters.

I tried sending !MYPSM and !NP to my both, online and offline contacts but I didn't noticed anything.
Did you mean /psm and /name?

Hehe, not !MYPSM and !NP, they must be in brackets like I wrote (and in capitals [don't use small case this time ]).

You can have a look at Insert Special Tag submenu of Plus! menu of conversation windows to see other avaliable special tags.
