"The cake is a lie" in your language by Aeryn on 01-16-2008 at 09:35 PM

I want to know the sentence "the cake is a lie" (you know, from Portal) in as many languages as possible - I'm gonna make a list of the translations. If you're wondering, here's the IRC conversation that led to this:

[16.01.08][21:20:04] <bto> haz's cake is a lie ;o
[16.01.08][21:20:15] <Haz> :O
[16.01.08][21:20:16] <Haz> yes.
[16.01.08][21:20:30] <Haz> la tarta es una mentira!
[16.01.08][21:20:50] <Haz> (Peri said that once actually :p)
[16.01.08][21:21:29] <bto> :p
[16.01.08][21:21:41] <bto> in mexico, we would say
[16.01.08][21:21:54] <bto> "el pastel es una mentira"
[16.01.08][21:22:01] <Haz> aha
[16.01.08][21:23:18] <bto> :p
[16.01.08][21:23:43] <Haz> i think i might start a collection of that sentence in different languages, like svip did with his babies sentence
[16.01.08][21:23:48] <Haz> it would be interesting

Also, if you say things differently in different countries/areas even though the language is the same (like with Spanish), I'd be more than happy to know how it's said specifically in your country.

Edit: and please also say what language you translated it to, and country, if it's relevant. :p

Thanks all. <3

Unicode characters don't work in postbits, so I had to print them on images.

"The cake is a lie." English

« Le gâteau est un mensonge. » French

„ Die Torte ist eine Lüge.“ *German

*I think that's what it would be I don't know very much German but I will be having German class sometime soon but until then I only think thats correct.

I don't understand "The cake is a lie" though is that supposed to mean something or is it just nothing.

Portuguese: O bolo é uma mentira

BTW, it's not a lie. I finished the game and I can tell it's not a lie. Moreover, it's delicious. Chocolate.

literally translated to Dutch it would be

"De cake is een leugen."
though I wouldn't use that sentence myself :P but that's just because it makes no sense

And yes, we use the same word for cake

Hmmm, I personally would translate it as "De taart is een leugen." (or possible "Het gebak is een leugen").
In my opinion "Cake" is more appropriate for those long things you take slices of, while "Taart" of "Gebak" refers more to the actual cake (as in a piece of pie) that Portal is refering to.

Danish: Kagen er en løgn

RE: "The cake is a lie" in your language by vikke on 01-17-2008 at 08:22 PM

Swedish, very similar to Danish: Kakan är en lögn.

You're almost right, but "Der Kuchen ist eine Lüge" would be a more accurate translation because "Torte" translates to "pie", while cake is "Kuchen" in German.

taart = pie
that's why I chose to use "cake"
but "gebak" may be better indeed ;) (although I'd translate "gebak" to "pastry")

edit: just checked, babelfish says cake = cake :P

"See kook on vale"? :D

"Ära hõiska enne õhtut" would be quite appropriate actually. Just to mention, this is an Estonian version. :P

Although, the forum won't support unicode. You'll probably need to capture an image or something.

Btw, i'm interested to know what do we call cake in hindi, http://www.shabdkosh.com/en2hi/cake doesn't give me any good results.

Since this forum doesn't support Unicode characters in postbits, and many languages require this, I have added all translations so far on this page. Feel free to contribute.

Latvian: "kūka ir meli"

Grammatical footnote -- strictly speaking, that means "cake is lies". The word for a lie is one of the oddball words in Latvian that is always used in plural. We know what the singular form would be, but we don't use it.

Edit: ū is a u + macron.

RE: "The cake is a lie" in your language by Panos on 01-23-2008 at 07:53 PM

Greek: To keik einai ena psema.

In greek characters the phrase would look quite different, but they don't
appear, so that's all I got.
