Multi-monitor problem.... by Sao on 01-19-2008 at 03:49 PM

Ive finnaly decided to go multi-moniter! but i have a problem...Ive plugged the second monitor into the card and started up the computer. When I go to the Display panel, the second monitor is not shown. I feel as though ive tried ecverything to get it to show up but I have had no luck. Does anyone know how I can get this to show up so i can enable the monitor?

The Graphics card:
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440,, it has the latest driver installed. It can take two monitors, one VGA, one DVI. My screens are identical so i had to get a DVI-VGA adapter.

There is an attachment showing what I see on the Display Panel.

Thanks.

What does that do? It looks as though it just has options for multi-monitors.

Yes, but it may help :p. As it has "Windows Monitor Options"

PS: You did restart after putting in the second monitor, correct?

Yes Ive restarted the computer multiple times. I downloaded Ultramon and its not what i need. I don't need options for multiple display as NVIDIA control panel has some. I just need the computer to recognize my second monitr.

Does it show up in the Device manager at all..?

Also have you tried the monitor by its self in both slots (connections whatever)

How do i get to the device manager? I may have seen it earlier on today but im not sure how to get to it.

If i have just one monitor, it works in the first slot but not in the second. Both monitors work fine on their own, its just when they are tried together.

control panel > system > hardware tab > device manager

What video driver are you using, do you know?
If you haven't done so already, update your driver from here:

First of all make sure that the new screen is working properly :
- Detach all screens's connection and only connect your new one by VGA
If it works, which I'm guessing it would, then the screen is properly working.

Make sure the dvi-vga is working properly :
- Detach all screens's connection and only connect your new one by DVI.
- Detach all screens's connection and only connect your old one by DVI.

If all of the above has worked, it really has to do with your card not being able to pick up 2 monitors at the same time; which I have found 2 people having the same issue with a little googling yet no solution..

When I plug in the screens using just eh dvi-vga adapter it just shows going to sleep and then they turn off. :S

does it do that with both screens?
if it indeed does that with both the old and new monitor, i suspect the dvi-vga adapter might be faulty.

If you have access to one, see if you can borrow a monitor with DVI input, and plug it in. Then you'l know if its the adaptor or the output itself thats not working

RE: Multi-monitor problem.... by Sao on 01-21-2008 at 05:05 PM

I've found out why it doesnt work! The video card only has one RAMDAC so it can't convert the signal for the screeen to analogue which means that even a DVI-VGA adapter won't change the signal. Only monitors that use a digital signal will work!
