Firstly I want to say that I'm a very happy user of Messenger Plus for years so I'm not trying to bash anyone. Only wondering why Pareto Logic rates Plus! as an "infection" when running any their antimalware products (I run XoftSpy). This is what they say:
"Messenger Plus Live is a program that provides added functionnality to the microsoft instant messenger. It come bundled with the swizzor trojan as a "sponsor" program. The author had his MVP status revoked as a result of his association with well known spyware merchants."

None of the other antimalware products I use (AVG, Norton, NOD32) rate Plus as a threat.

The information provided by that site is incorrect

Messenger Plus Live features ADWARE but not spyware.  Adware merely disaplays pop-up advertisments (for sites such as amazon) in internet explorer at random intervals.  Spyware is malicious programming which may log passwords or credit card information

I can assure you that as long as you downloaded Messenger Plus Live from the Offical Website then there will be 100% no spyware in it

For more reliable online scans try TrendMicro HouseCall or Windows Live Safety Center

djdannyp, the website doesn't actually say that Messenger Plus! Live is spyware. It says it includes a sponsor program, which is correct. Doesn't mention that it's optional though . As for "Uses excessive system resources", that's to be discussed..

That's a sad description.. I don't see the point of mixing my personal life with product's facts... goes to show how good these "malware" reports are.

So don't worry about this crap, uninstall this software and install a better one

i am a user of plus and i am not going to change it for any reason.

its true that if you install the patrocinator you will be disturbed by the ads and it uses a lot of sistem resourses.

until a week ago the xsoftspy only detect plus as a treat if you had installed the patrocinator and the description didnt say that:
"The author had his MVP status revoked as a result of his association with well known spyware merchants."

i am not concerned about what patchou do but
now plus is detected as a treat with or without sponsor program
because the mpv status of patchou is revoked

now my question is:

what excactly is mpv status?


anyway i know that i am not having problem if i dont install the sponsor so i keep with plus

but i think that the description has to say that you can also choose to install or not the patrocinator like chris4 said.

and about the mpv status i dont know if it is necesary to be mentioned in the description.

Well I e-mailed PareToLogic. They have changed their description. Put the correct name "Messenger Plus! Live". Removed the comment about Patchou and also added that the sponsor is optional. Result!

The new update sounds much better.

I have a small issue with the sponsor program since I don't want my programs going haywire over it and getting 50 million popups just to delete something. (one reason why I don't install it) And plus, I have things against IE, and I don't like that browser starting when I don't want it to...

But anyway, Microsoft is just stupid, plain and simple. XD I don't know about other Anti-Virus/Spyware/Adware companies that detect Plus! Live as a threat or anything, but I'll keep a look out just in case if I find any.

this morning i cheked the description and here is the new one:

"Messenger Plus! Live is an add-on for Windows Live Messenger. The user should be aware that the software bundles with optional "sponsor" programs."

anyway when you scan with xsoftspy messenger plus! live is  detected as a treat with or without the sponsor installed.
