Start > Run > Type msconfig and click OK.

These are the most of the programs that run when you log on to Windows.

Just tick the programs you want to run at startup. Be careful what you untick. You need drivers to run at startup, but untick any programs you don't need/want. That should speed up your pc.

Next, download Ad-Aware 2007 and do a full scan.

Download CCleaner and select what you want to clean out. Also do a registry scan.

Uninstall any programs you do not want. CCleaner has a built in remover in the Tools, but you can also do it from Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

Scan your PC for viruses, I'd recommend AVG Free.

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
From here you can do a Disk Cleanup and a Disk Defragmenter. Both take a while but they will speed up your PC.

# Right-click the "My Computer" icon (on the desktop or in the Start Menu) and select "Properties" to open the "System Properties" window.

# Click the "Advanced" tab.

# In the section labelled "Performance", click the "Settings" button to open the "Performance Options" window.

# In the "Visual Effects" tab, choose the visual effects that you want in the "Custom" scroll box by ticking or unticking items.
After you done that, I'd recommend unticking everything BUT these:
- Show shadows under menus
- Smooth edges on screen fonts
- Use a background image for each folder type
- Use common tasks in folders
- Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop
- Use visual styles on windows and buttons

But you can choose what you like. The above is what I was recommended by another article and it works great, PC a lot faster.

Well.. that's my steps to speed up a PC and make it stop freezing. Worked on my friends a few days ago, he was pleased :).

Good luck!
