High Gloss -> Yes or No? by albert on 01-29-2008 at 01:25 AM

Well I've been wanting to get a monitor for a long while now. I finally decided to get one next week, the question is; which?

I wanted to go with a Samsung (I heard a lot of good reviews, and my LCD tv just makes me want to stick with that brand) and I wanted a 22". So I checked the web and noticed that this particular panel was being suggested by every single review I've read :

Now browsing on the FutureShop site, I saw this other panel;

which seems to be equals in spec, but has one single difference : the "high gloss". At first I thought it was the black frame that was glossy, which it is and I love, but by going to see it in person, I noticed the screen had this laptop glossy screen (which reminds me most new laptop don't seem to have anymore.. hype seems to be done).

Now to be honest, I really love the gloss's shape. It looks just like a mini-tv and I love that about it. The panels have a 20$ difference (gloss is 340 compared to the first one ast 320) yet, the glossy display worries me..

I wanted to get your point of view on the matter. I am going to watch dvd and also play a few games, so that would make the gloss very useful I guess, but what about the rest? Should I stick with the normal panel for standard programming and productive work?

I'd really appreciate your opinions. Thank you.

The gloss is supposed to give richer colour IIRC. I think it's just a personal preference really. If you like it, get it, if not, don't. :-)

My new laptop has a glossy screen and it's AWESOME!!! No matter which way you look at it it's just sooooo cool. Especially when you're looking at it from an angle. (H) So go with the glossy. :D

EDIT: Oh I didn't see what you would be using it for. In that case the actual shape of the glossy screen isn't exactly what you'd want with programming and all that. So I'd go with the regular in that case. The glossy one just feels big fat and bloated, not really what you want when you're playing a game.

Gloss rocks :D!.

Regarding gloss, it really does make the screen look crystal clear and appears to deliver better looking images but it can be a bit annoying if there is a light source in front of the screen as there will be quite a bit of glare.

If I were to recommend a monitor I would recommend the 22" HP w2207, looks very elegant (it's also glossy) and delivers great contrast and beautiful images :P Very awesome monitor. You can also get the w2207h which supports HDMI input if your graphics card or gaming console support that.

i have 2 of these:

and it's awesome!! it looks and works just great, no problems at all. Even when the sunlight is intense I don't have much glare. So you can go ahead and buy it. I think the 2nd 1 is pretty much the same screen except that it has more features like MagicBright3 and looks kinda ugly to me. gud luck

here r some large images i found of both screens, notice the difference?

Thanks to all of your for your replies, I think I'll end up going for the glossy monitor (it just looks too damn good, and since it seems it won't take anything away and will only give vibrant color; why not?!

Also, to volv, I've check the w2207, it seems to only be 1000:1 contrast and 5ms response time and doesn't have any HDMI inputs..
Also, both the ones I mentionned are cheaper and have higher specs, so thank you for the suggestion, but I'll stick to the glossy monitor.

:)

I know, but that would've been the only reason I'd consider that monitor.

i regretted buying a laptop with a glossy screen.... a bit of light and it's hard to see...
