if you are willing to change your mind you should definately have a look here www.msy.com.au. they have great parts at cheap prices. but they are mostly in melbourne.

For example, from that shop, if u pay just 8 more dollars for the processor you can get the next model up (E4600) or u can save 14 dollars on ur current processor. Or you can get the same ram for 3 dollars less lol. or you can get the dvd burner for 3 dollars less. Or the hard drive for 12 dollars less. or the same gfx card (ASUS brand)  for 10 dollars less. and i think u can get a 550W case for 29 dollars there.

The differences may not be much but you can save a little money for the same parts.

P.S 1 = do u need a mouse that expensive
P.S 2 = whats your OS?

Sorry if you do not like my suggestions, just trying to help :)

As cheap as possible.

www.msy.com.au.

Their branches seem to be nowhere near where I am (Baulkham Hills shire). I'd like to be able to do pick-up (saves money for postage) and have it relatively close to me. The computer target branch I've been to is about 3-5 minutes from home, which I like.

1). Its the best (IMO) mouse there that is cordless, unfortunately. On the bright side they don't really update their site for minor changes, and the prices are lower sometimes.

2). Windows XP Pro SP2. Might consider MCE (torrents ftw) if I'm that bored. Virtualising Ubuntu 7.10 too.

I can't help with matters in Australia (I've got a friend who rants to me about prices down there all the time), but I suggest sticking to Windows XP Pro for now. Vista just isn't worth $250 right now and I'm probably not going to wait for SP1 to be released.

As for Media Center Edition, I've got no idea on the changes (nor one of my friends) besides the Media Center it has.

This is only my suggestion though, since Vista is very unstable still...

it's already a pretty low-end computer...

My current PC should explain why, to my needs, it is high-end. I don't do any gaming, so my standards are considerably lower, I guess.

ShawnZ You cannot say if its a low-end computer untill you knew what he ws using it for. Yeah sure if it was a gaming computer then yeah it would be low end etc.

As a user of the VX nano i can definitely recommend it.

My only quibble is lack of middle click button as it is permanently set to switch between the two scroll modes. I just reconfigured left scroll to middle click since I rarely scroll laterally anyway. Just thought I might let you know.

..otherwise almost perfect mouse.

can't comment on aussie prices though

I can't think of any apps I use that require middle-click anyway, apart from Google Earth, but I can just use the keyboard to zoom in and out...

what he's using it for makes no difference on what end it is -- it's just that word processing etc are activities that require low-end computers

If it's really not for gaming, you can skip the GeForce.  The motherboard you want has Intel graphics onboard, which will work just fine for other uses.

Careful with that, although it's looks are wonderful, it was way to small for my hand. I had to bring it back.

If I were you I'd go for the Logitech VX revolution (way better for price, features and handle).

Oh and 88$ is way expensive.. I got mine at 40$ at the time.
RE: new comp (i wish) - hot or not? by ryxdp on 02-01-2008 at 10:50 PM

@ Adeptus: Is the onboard graphics shared? If not, then I'll cross off the GeForce, because I'd like to have higher quality video etc. Plus it doesn't have DVI.

@ Adeptus albert (wtf?): I just Googled the VX Nano, and you're right, it's horribly small. VX Revolution looks way better. Thanks for pointing that out :P

Anything under 2GHz is too slow for me, I've been stuck with 1.2GHz for a while now...

EDIT: Thanks dazzy :P

That CPU will be more than enough for shiTunes.
