Force IE7 mode for IE8 users by riahc4 on 03-10-2008 at 12:29 AM

Hey

Does Messenger Plus! mind adding the

code:
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=7" />
tag to its pages? Most of the forum's pages are kind of messed up and screwed up
RE: Force IE7 mode for IE8 users by Menthix on 03-10-2008 at 12:31 AM

Don't use a buggy beta browser in the first place? What's the point in forcing IE7 mode if you could just not use IE8 yourself.

Not IE8 fault. Its Messenger Plus!'s website fault.

IE8 complies as you know to standards. If Msghelp has some quick IE fixes/tricks and is nonstandard, add this tag and while you fix the website to comply with standards, everyone can view the site as normal.

IE8 is compliant to IE8's standards. IE8 is a beta, use IE7...

RE: Force IE7 mode for IE8 users by Spunky on 03-10-2008 at 12:48 AM

The site works fine in other standards compliant browsers... In fact it appears fine in IE8 now that I think about it

RE: Force IE7 mode for IE8 users by WDZ on 03-10-2008 at 12:49 AM

If IE8 is standards-compliant, shouldn't the board look the same in IE8 as it does in other standards-compliant browsers like Firefox and Opera? :p

Microsoft is still working on it, so I'd rather wait and see if they fix the problems than add special tags to accommodate it.

It does not, some alignments are messed up.

Who are you kidding?

Looks the same except avatars and other text in that cell or more left aligned. Not really the worst job they've ever made of a browser is it? I'm personally using Netscape 9 until I find it impossible to get my hands on it anymore

I installed IE8 Beta to do some tests and almost did what you suggested. But seeing how IE8 Beta 1 is unusable for normal day to day browsing, I'll just remind everybody that this beta is clearly for "web developers" only. There's a reason they added an IE7 Emulation button.

As being in the category of "web developer" here, I'll work on making it compatible with the final version of IE8 and I already asked Guido to take a look at it. It will probably just be a matter of removing IE-specific hacks. In the meantime, msgpluslive.net will look in IE8 like what 70% of the sites on the internet currently look in it: broken (that's a necessary step toward standards in the case of Microsoft though, that's probably a good move).

<!--[if lt IE 7]>
<script defer="defer" type="text/javascript" src="/jscripts/pngfix.js"></script>
<style type="text/css">@import url(/css/mpl-ie-lt7.css);</style>
<![endif]-->
<!--[if IE]>
<style type="text/css">@import url(/css/mpl-ie.css);</style>
<![endif]-->

sup.

What? Guido wrote those CSS workarounds for final, non-beta versions of IE. =p

Maybe the second one should be "lt IE 8", but it's only one line of code for the footer height, so I doubt it'll make much difference.

Stop spreading BS.

IE8 complies 100% to both ACID 1 and ACID 2, just like Firefox and Opera does. Its not fault that websites have IE hacks and its not websites' fault that they have to use IE hacks but now its up to the websites to fix it, not IE/MS.

Noone.
Like I said it complies to the same standards as FX/Opera

then why don't Firefox and Opera mess up the website too?

Anyway, like said before, IE8 is still in beta and will (hopefully) be supported once it reaches its final stage

Yes, it's IE's fault. Had IE complied to standards the first time around there would have been no need for IE hacks.

Exact point I were gunna make
RE: Force IE7 mode for IE8 users by riahc4 on 03-10-2008 at 11:10 PM

First people complain that IE isnt standard and just make hacks
Now people make notice that IE IS standard and complain about the hacks that were in made the first time.

[Moderator edit: don't insult people. Your next ban is going to be a permanent one.]
