The beauty of Google Maps by RebelSean on 03-25-2008 at 04:17 AM

I was bored a bit ago, so I was looking around various things to do in the Chicago area (I will be there in April ), so I decided to check out the street view feature because I usually just use WL Maps to do locations and directions, etc. So I zoomed into my grandma's house, and sure enough my car is in the driveway. I'm astonished, I was not aware that Google Maps did this sort of thing.

The street image was from July of 2007 whilst we were up there, my windows are now tinted :p.

Never, ever doubt the power of Google Maps.  Haha, I looked mine up too and it is kinda freaky to see that this giantic camera car thing was in my complex.

Too bad they don't have this feature for Greece :(

Google Maps is even more handy on my iPod Touch. It's pretty creepy that it can actually locate me withing 30 meters of accuracy using wifi :dodgy: ("Locate Me" feature). Plus after that, I can search for say "Sushi" and it will list all the stuff around my place. Really handy when you are thinking of something to do, on your feet.

P.S. Open wifi hotspots are awesome :).

They won't have these features in Europe as it will violate many European countries' privacy laws.

But this is just another example of Google World Domination BETA.

That's probably because street view pictures were not taken there :P.

Google maps are awesome, but i personally think that Google Earth is just even better, you can see everything in earth and it is very useful.

I love it.

hey peepz...please do not literally post those stupidly long links like that, they seriously mess up the whole layout... Use the [URL=link]text[/URL] tags instead....

;)

Apparently they are already taking pictures in certain parts of Europe. Heard an interview with a Google person about in on Dutch radio today.

Guess they're taking the typical Google approach again: "Just break the law, we'll make the law change later" :(.

Oh, and FAIL:

You know when you see it... it is like an overgrown icecream van with cameras sticking out, 2 dodgy people in front, some antennas, etc... Not quite so anonymous :P (at least the one I've seen in a docu on tv, they have "undercover" vans too :p)....

more Google (or similar) vehicles:

They have different models (different cars, different camera setups) AFAIK.

And not every car with cameras on it will be a Google car. Friend of mine worked for a company where they drove around with a multiple GPS-linked cams too. They were just filming roads and taking pictures of signs. They don't have the 360 degrees of cams tho. Just 2 at the front and 2 at the back i believe.
