How to speed up starting windows? by somelauw on 03-30-2008 at 08:19 PM
When starting up windows it seems to me that the time between (desktop is shown) and (the program you clicked has been opened -usually firefox-) is getting longer and longer.
I'm using winXP SP2.
Programs which start when windows start are:
MSN
Stuffplug
Is there a way to get a whole list?
Does anyone have suggestions to speed this up?
I was thinking of decreasing the number of applications which run at startup. Is there a way to find these and can anybody tell me which I can safely remove?
Edit: typo

Download AutoRuns, select "Hide Microsoft entries", and post a list of your startup items.

you can use the built-in msconfig
just type it in Run then select the startup tab

I don't know a way to copy this, so I took a screenshot and here is a list of items below the scrollbar:
- Blootooth manager
- MS Office
- Poort van Symantec
BTW: I alreay tried to resize the window. (Didn't work.)

msconfig doesn't list everything.

My thought was: Why downloading a tool if it's built-in?
But alright: I downloaded it.
I think I need to use autorunsc -m to print it?

Could I disable all of them?
RE: How to speed up starting windows? by YottabyteWizard on 03-31-2008 at 06:40 PM
IMO, disable this:
Nero Filter check
SunJavaUpdateSched (just checks for updates for Java)
Adobe Photo Downloader (if you use Adobe Album to see pictures don't disable it)

If you disable all of them, your anti-virus, bluetooth, graphics drivers and your touchpad processes won't run. It's best to just disable the one's you don't need, which are Nero, Sun Java and Adobe.
RE: How to speed up starting windows? by somelauw on 03-31-2008 at 07:13 PM
Well, I don't know what all programs do, like for example SMSerial. I don't think it's safe to remove.
Nero was a program for making back-ups of dvd's or something like. I don't really know what it's use is.
If I remove Sun Java out of the list, will I still be able to run java applications?
I will uninstall Adobe sometime. I don't know why I downloaded it.

Google is your friend...
I get sick of saying it

Motorola based modem driver
So.. you decide if you want it at startup. If you remove it from startup, you can still run the program at any time.

Good spot for checking if a startup item is needed or not.

everything listed is safe to remove. a fresh installation of windows should have nothing listed there.
