Memory/CPU Usage issues (Specific Cause) by ryan2390 on 05-17-2008 at 07:50 PM

The Basics:

Windows Live Messenger 8.5
Plus version 4.60
XP Pro SP2

A few nights ago I double clicked on a contact and WLM hung. Within about 10 seconds my laptop had stopped responding to commands. As such I unplugged it and removed the battery and re booted. It did the same thing a couple of other times until I gave up. Since then I've had a couple of other crashes. Again related to one contact. And tonight it's doing it again.

As far as I can tell it;s random. However so far it has only done it on two contacts. Both with the extension installed on there machines. I was fortunate enough today however to have task manager open when WLM hung. The CPU usage and memory usage both went up through the roof.

I have tried completely removing the extension and WLM and installing both from scratch. So that rules out a bad WLM build. The only changes are some windows updates and a new theme.

So any ideas? 'Cause I'm stumped.

try deleting your contacts cache

C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Messenger\
C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\
C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\
C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Contacts\
C:\Windows\Temp\MessengerCache\
The contacts cache is the one in bold, but it won't hurt to remove the other directories as well.

Many thanks.
Mind If I ask why it does it?
