The New York Times adFirefox Flicks…the Firefox crop circleOperation Firefox…you name it!  The Firefox community is always up to some cool, collaborative way to declare their passion for Firefox.  What better way to do this than band together to set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours?!

It’s a whole lot easier and safer than donning a beard of bees or underwater jump roping. All you have to do is download Firefox 3 when it goes live on Download Day — some time in June. In the meantime check out Download Day Headquarters and pledge to download Firefox 3.  We’ll let you know when Firefox 3 goes out the door, kicking off our 24-hour attempt.

Here are some other ways you can help in the run up to Download Day:

* Get the word out; tell your friends, your neighbors, your grandma, anyone and everyone to participate in Download Day.
* Host a party to download Firefox; you provide the people and we’ll provide the party favors.
* Put a Download Day badge on your blog, profile or website.

With your help the Firefox community can go down in history!  If you have any questions or ideas please drop us a line at worldrecord @ mozilla.com.

I'm signed up :P

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Basilis on 06-17-2008 at 07:21 PM

I just updated to version 3.0. Your link worked fine for me.

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by tony on 06-17-2008 at 07:24 PM

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by aNILEator on 06-17-2008 at 07:43 PM

I just got it from the UK site :D

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by andrewdodd13 on 06-17-2008 at 09:32 PM

I think I'm going to stop beta testing programs shortly. It sort of ruins all the fun of a new release... :)

Downloaded it anyway.

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by user27089 on 06-17-2008 at 11:31 PM

Am I the only person who was there to download the file and just got a corrupt *.exe? It annoyed me enough to refuse to download it again, I'll tell you that much.

I downloaded the Windows, Mac and Linux ones all at once. Took me 10 mins. :) (L)My Multiboot setup.

Finally, i waited half of the day yesterday (the 17th) and all i got was 2.0. Guess they picked a convenient American time to do an international event, how do they set an official record whith such bad communication?:(

Just download a localized build from the us site....

I always used the English version, that's not the problem. But i was told FF3 download day would be the 17th... around 5pm on the 17th there was no FF3 yet, if they want to break a record they could at least have released it on time for most timezones to get people downloading it :).
RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by John Anderton on 06-18-2008 at 08:20 AM

I've had two downloads today. I could do a few hundred more (A)

I think Menthix meant the actual Download Day event - in Australia time's up at 6:16pm. That's hardly a full day at all! It started at 3am here too...But in the US it started at 11:16am. How convenient.

EDIT: Yeah I was right.

Weren't you on dialup :P? But yea you could always start a download and end it at 0.01% and start again and so on...

I download it and even called up a few friends of mine just to tell them to download it, lol. I know its kinda lame but meh.

No. Only complete downloads are counted. Automatic updates from previous versions don't count also.

How is it lame :P I've been banging on to everyone I know all day to download it. Everyone now thinks I'm a stupid nerd and they couldn't really give a stuff, but meh :P
RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by John Anderton on 06-18-2008 at 08:56 AM

Felu fails at wgetting :refuck:
And yes, complete downloads, one per computer and all to be human initiated. If only I had to go to univ today :refuck:
I basically have access to at least 300 computers :(
To bad only one of the many servers I have allows me to wget :( I wish Windows domains would give out remote access control :P Would certainly make life more fun :P (And yes, I'm allowed to download on my servers because its still one complete download per computer and human initiated :)) If only I hadn't finished my exams on Monday, I could boost the Indian download count by a few hundred.
And I didn't have download speed issues Felu. I got my usual speed. It was done in like 3-4 minutes.

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Aardvark on 06-18-2008 at 08:59 AM

What about downloading one of each platform type (Windows/Mac/Linux) for the same computer by the same computer?

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Felu on 06-18-2008 at 09:06 AM

JA: I just thought you had a dialup connection, didn't know you had got broadband.

I never had dial up. I am not on broadband either :P Its cable which is terribly slow :P
Welcome to the world of bandlimited internets (aka India) :P

Doubt that. You should only download the one for your platform. That's why those guys select the download for you. They detect your platform and region, give you the closest mirror and the appropriate file for FF3. :)
RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Aardvark on 06-18-2008 at 09:16 AM

But I use all three! Which was why it was annoying because I then had to go out and manually hunt down the Linux and Mac versions...

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by John Anderton on 06-18-2008 at 09:18 AM

Download them from your Linux and Mac machines :-p

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Menthix on 06-18-2008 at 12:39 PM

Yeah, i had to zoom out too.

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Aardvark on 06-18-2008 at 12:43 PM

Rah it doesn't show Australia. :( What's wrong with the size it's fine. It's not as if there's a lot of content you need to read.

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Menthix on 06-18-2008 at 12:49 PM

I think it sizes to your screen's resolution, but i don't have my browser window fullscreen :p.

Also, http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord/ has a map with the current count of every country.

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Aardvark on 06-18-2008 at 12:52 PM

Yeah I've been refreshing that all afternoon, until Australia hit 100,000. Then I was happy and just gave up on it.

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by M73A on 06-18-2008 at 02:00 PM

got my version!! :-p

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Basilis on 06-18-2008 at 02:06 PM

What is the number of downloads that Firefox must brake? If anyone knows?

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Aardvark on 06-18-2008 at 02:09 PM

Nothing. The record has never been set before. They were aiming 5 Million though and they got it. :D

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Menthix on 06-18-2008 at 02:13 PM

* Menthix wonders what Messenger Plus' daily download count is around big releases :p

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Basilis on 06-18-2008 at 02:17 PM

We should organize to break Firefox's record when the Messenger Plus Live 5.0 will be released.

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Aardvark on 06-18-2008 at 02:19 PM

I somehow think more people use Firefox than they do MP!L...so really MP!L probably wouldn't be able to break it...still, it might be fun.

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Basilis on 06-18-2008 at 02:24 PM

The fun of breaking a record is the difficulty of it and the preparation. Though, I believe too that it would be very tough to break Firefox's record. :)

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Aardvark on 06-18-2008 at 02:31 PM

Is it even still going or what. Originally I thought it ended at 5 PM here then it was 6:16 PM but it's still going and the map keeps going up...

MenthiX's downloadcounter site seems to think it's still going too...

Meh, the bigger the better. :P

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Menthix on 06-18-2008 at 02:35 PM

final 3 build released 10am PDT, so i guess it lasts to 10amPDT today./

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by somelauw on 06-18-2008 at 07:20 PM

Sorry if this has already been asked, but is firefox compatible with plugins like flash and such?

RE: Firefox 3 - Download Day 2008 by Voldemort on 06-18-2008 at 07:26 PM

actually 8 million downloads in a day is very low compared to 9,000 downloads of plus per minute.

I think Plus! is more like 9000 per hour at the usual rate.

thanks
Edited with the new firefox.

Lot of work into documenting and logging to the standards of the GWR. Patchou probably wouldn't be in the mood for all that extra work :p
