Should I buy a Macbook by ipab on 06-27-2008 at 06:35 AM

Ok here is the deal, I already have a laptop, a HP DV2410CA. I am fairly satisfied with it, the only thing is that it runs really hot and it is a bit of a pain to lug around sometimes since it is heavy.

I have for the past year been using a mac and to be frank, I quite like the OS, rest assured that if I get a mac, I will be dual booting it with either vista or xp (haven't decided yet). Anyway, I was looking into a macbook because it seems like it is easier to carry and since it uses a core2duo proc over an AMD Turion proc, it will be a lot cooler.

The thing is that I work for Staples and I found a macbook in our storage (we aren't really big sellers of mac products...) and it is now on clearance for $850 CAD.
The only thing being that it is the older generation macbook, Click Here for specs (look at specs for the midrange white macbook), and right now there is a $100 off any clearance laptop event going on, and therefore including my employee discount and taxes (13% !) the price would come to $750 CAD.

So my question is, should I go with the macbook, or do you guys have any other suggestion on a laptop to buy that you think will suit my needs?

Just as a side note, if you are one of those that says that I shouldn't go with the macbook, perhaps you can give me a suggestion on what other laptop to buy then. The only requirement being that it is at staples, because they have a nice, no-interest, computer purchase plan. Essentially all the current models we sell are on the website at Staples.ca (use postal code V3J7N8). Ofcourse the clearance stuff might not necessarily show up on there, so if you guys any key features I should be looking for in a laptop when buying it, then suggest away and I will take that into consideration too :).

Thanks for all your help in advance.

P.S. I really am looking for serious answers in this topic unlike other topics in which I don't mind as much, so if you feel the urge to give one liners or similar responses, don't do it in this thread:refuck:.

I would definitely go with it(as long as you don't use your laptop for gaming - it's really all down to what you use the laptop for). I mean, if you can get it cheap you might as well :P

Only thing that puts me off is it's one of the older ones but meh.

Well my brother's got an Macbook and I'd say I pretty much like it.It's sleek and good looking , light and also has good battery life.So I'd say go for a Macbook.

With your first point, buy a Core2 laptop....

I would recommend the Asus M50SV

Specs:

quote:
            M50SV-AS082G
CPU:      Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5Ghz
OS:         Vista Ultimate
RAM:     2GB DDR2  / 4GB DDR2(+$30)
HDD:      250GB SATA
Graphic: Nvidia 9500GS
                up to 896MB Turbo Cache
Screen:   15.4 WXGA+ (1440 x 900)
* 2yrs World Wide Warranty * DVD Burner * 1.3MP Web Cam
* BT * Finger Print Reader * WiFi 11N
* Altech Lansing Dolby Speakers
That laptop is  $1500Au. Dont know how much that is in your currency sorry.
And in comparance, my friend got a brand new MacBook, with 2.1ghz,2GB, 160GB,13 inch screen, for $1300......(Off apples site)
So this is a good valued laptop :)

I really dont know if its in Staples or not..... as its not in Australia

But a buying tip: T9300 is best valued Laptop processor on the market currently.
If looks matter, that laptop looks fairly slick in my opinion.

I would recommend getting any Asus laptop with a T9300 processor. I really like Asus laptops.

But all in all, if your getting a new laptop, just get one with a Core2Duo T9300 processor. Its cheap and FAST.

SO... I went ahead and bought one :). So I am posting again, to see if you guys have any recommendations for apps.

Right now I have:

Bento
Frostwire
Messenger for Mac
iWork '08
Coda
Transmit
AppZapper
VLC
Firefox
Pixelmator
Flip for Mac
Little Snitch
Quicksilver
Transmission
UnRarX
The Unarchiver
Toast 9

The one thing I am really unhappy about is something that parallells uTorrent for mac :(... The one feature that I miss the most is the multiple tracker support. If you guys know of a lightweight client that supports multiple trackers, please let me know.

RE: Should I buy a Macbook by prashker on 07-06-2008 at 05:28 AM

Transmission does support Multi-Tracker torrents :p.

Since 1.20 :p

RE: Should I buy a Macbook by ipab on 07-06-2008 at 06:09 AM

Does it support it how uTorrent supports it?

Does it handle file conversions properly?

The real reason I'm trying out Toast is because of it's file converter. Disco seems like a nicer app overall though.

If you guys can think of a good file converter app, let me know.

wow voldemort you really added to the subject there didn't you.

I can't think of any other apps you might want really, other than office 2008 and Adobe Master Collection, but then I'm into my artsy things.

Possibly you'll want Microsofts remote desktop client beta, AMSN beta and Adium.

I have office 2008 (free via school :)) just hesitating to install it that's all and I do have RDC installed :).

The other thing is, does anyone know of any reason as to why my caps lock light works but my numlock light doesn't?

Not too sure where the numlock light is on MacBooks, maybe it's just dead?
