In game overlay? by A-Bite on 07-06-2008 at 03:47 PM

Steam can do it, Xfire can do it. Why not msn?

Having the ability to have an in game overlay would be one of the best scripts out! It would be some much better than constantly minimizing the game to speak to friends.

I'm not a scripter but i just thought i'd put this idea out, or see if anyone has actually made a script that will be able to do it.

That's because xfire injects itself into the game trough DirectX, msn doesn't use DirectX to draw it's windows. And a plugin or any other extension won't be abled to change this.

The most that could be created was a new window created in DirectX by a plugin that will relay the messages of MSN to this window.

However it's not easy to inject a new window like this into a game with DirectX.

There was a plugin that did this for WLM (and IRC), but it was uber buggy and didn't work on any of the games I played.

Search the forum for it, I can't find it, but it's here :p

Never mind in-game overlay, I'd love if there was a script that just showed what game you were playing through Steam/Xfire. Been looking around for one, obviously not one around =/.

(Stop having the same name as me SonicSam!)

There is a plugin that does this, however it never worked that well for me, but it's called Appmon, try it out.

Yeah, I was looking at it, guess I'll try it out :)
(And I wanted to have Sonicboom, alas though, 'twas taken >.<)

EDIT: Yay it works, thanks guys :) Think I had something like it on my old comp..Meh. Didn't give it a second look when I was browsing, cause the description was confusing xD. And you were right Sonic, the browser didn't work with vista.

nicely hijacked:P

soo anyone going to program the osd plugin as a script?

to say its impossible is daft, theres a million and one bits of software using overlay support, i can even get the contacts on desktop option in messenger plus to appear on top of an fullscreen app.

maybe it would need to be an app rather than a script, one way or another its possible, and would be highly prized by gamers (and other fullscreen app users) who have to leave the action to read a message (usually to find its something unimportant) and swap back to the game.

perhaps using something like the vista on nvidia tweak and overlay enable options as used in ventrilo as a guide/start point.

Way to revive a dead post. ^_^

I'm currently using Raptr for all my msn in-game needs. It's actually pretty decent.
