Memory issues with Firefox 3 by ryxdp on 07-20-2008 at 04:56 AM

Well, since I got Firefox 3, it's seemed to use up more memory than version 2. It's pushing about 100,000K browsing deviantART, and about 80,000K on bash.org (one of the simplest sites I know of). The odd thing is that right now, as I'm writing this, it's at about 55,000K. I use RAMBack on arrival to every other page now, which is obviously very inconvenient and it's started to annoy me more and more. Does anyone know why this is?

I have Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2, 512MB of RAM, 1.2GHz AMD Athlon processor. Thanks :)

I do indeed have an excuse.

It's just too old. It uses PC133 RAM ffs :(. I've got a gig of Kingston DDR2 RAM waiting, along with an ASUS P5GC-MX which I hope to put to use sometime in the near future, when I get an actual computer.

if 100k memory is too much, get a new computer or stop browsing the web...

You could try going back to FF2 until you get a new computer =/

I am in the process of getting a new computer, should be at least an E4600 with 1GB of DDR2 memory.

Where would I get it from? Most of the sites have either updated it to 3, or are just generally dodgy.

EDIT: Thanks ddunk :P

Web browsers should not use more then 100k of memory while fewing a few websites at a time.
I know in Linux FF3 uses 300k of memory when viewing 3 websites at one time. This is abnormally LARGE, i hope the Windows Version isnt so memory hungry.

i have like 20 tabs open and i only get from 50k to 100k used =\

The dot in Window's task manager on the memory size doesn't indicate decimals. Instead of 50, 100 and 300k you mean 50000, 100000 and 300000k. As in ~50, ~100 and ~300megabyte.
RE: Memory issues with Firefox 3 by kotjze on 07-21-2008 at 01:26 AM

Use Linux! :D Right now, Firefox 3 is only using 71.2 MB. Everything on Linux seems to use a lot less ram, according to the task manager :)

Edit: On Windows I'm pretty sure it usually used at least 200 MB. That's why I could never leave it running in the background.

Try clearing out data in your profile. Tools > Clear Private Data
or just create a whole new profile / delete files for the current profile. I'm having issues with it too; after using firefox for a while it will stop loading new pages until I restart. BUT, it works fine under a different user on Windows.

I don't have that problem... then again I have a nice 2gb so I won't feel much.

All the cool kids have commas not periods. Also 30k = 30,000, a k usually stands for a thousand(which you probably know) but that's probably the sense he was using it in, if not then, newb 8-)
RE: Memory issues with Firefox 3 by Menthix on 07-21-2008 at 12:39 PM

Still... 300k != 300000k. And 300k of ks is just a very silly way of saying it :).

A browser shouldn't use more than 100Kb when viewing a page????????????

What kind of extremely slow browser would that be? An average image on the web is already over 100K...

Anyways, memory usage mostly depends on what page you're viewing. If it contains a lot of images, dynamic stuff, etc it uses more memory.

Be happy that your browser uses more memory than before. It means it can keep more stuff in memory and that means it will be faster.

Also, the Windows Task Manager is the last place you should look at to see how much memory a program actually uses.

(not taking in account memory leaks of course)

Yep, I know about that.

I'm not so sure there's anything to be happy about when I'm trying to browse deviantART or something, and WMP suddenly freaks out because there's not enough memory left...

Yes, I've thought about that. What would you suggest then?

Anyway, I'm back on Firefox 2 until I can get a decent amount of RAM.
