DELL GX110 PSU gone? by ryxdp on 08-03-2008 at 02:06 AM

Well, I've been having this problem for a while now. I have a Dell GX110 PC that I've been preparing for a friend (I had previously given him an old Pentium 133MHz with Win98 on it :P), but if I shut it down and try to turn it on again (doesn't matter how long or short, it still does this) its yellow power light blinks at me. The only solution I've found is to unplug it/switch it off/remove the CMOS battery and just leave it there for a bit.

I googled a bit and found it's either the PSU is dead, or something's going on with the RAM/VGA. Right now I can't replace the PSU, as it's a propietary design and apparently costs around $50-$100. I've checked the video plugs and everything seems fine. The RAM I can't really test, as I've only got one stick of PC100 (yes, it's old) spare, and I'm not even sure it works. I also don't have any floppies or CDs to put Memtest86 on.

Specs:
866MHz Pentium III
8/32MB* Intel Graphics controller w/ IBM P50
6GB Seagate HDD
Windows XP Pro SP2

*before SP2/after SP2. I'm not sure what to make of this. Windows bug?

Any ideas?

xp over heating it?
does the graphics even support xp?
and what space is left from 6gb after formatting and sp2?

XP is running just fine on it, no overheating at all.

The graphics controller seems to be having no trouble on XP, it is on 24-bit colour, though, but that's fine.

3.53GB is still left over after only installing SP2, WMP11 and Firefox.

k, use nlite and make XP smaller: there's a lot of crap that computer does not need. I would believe that WMP10/9 is lighter than WMP11. (I have an old compaq, with 266mhz and 288mb ram running an nlited version of XP fine, also with an original hdd of 6gb, but an nlited version of xp uses waaaaay less space than the original one).

Better than using nlite, try finding a copy of Windows Fundamentals and install that instead

Hmm, I forgot to mention it sometimes gives me a BSOD:

*** Hardware Malfunction

Call your hardware vendor for support

NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error

*** The system has halted ***

This leads me to believe the RAM's not looking very well. I'll try swapping out the RAM sticks one at a time with the spare I've got lying around.
