Start - Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs.

All I can say is that it will teach you to not install BETA software not yet ready for release.

Well sure that's an excuse for 9.0. However the thing that's happening with 8.5 Final is totally unexucsable

Not if you installed 9.0 Beta first.
Also I'd say bugs are excusable in free software.

I installed 8.5 first. 9.0 isn't working for some odd reason but it's a beta, so that's fine. But this is the final product of 8.5 |-)
RE: I take it I'm the only one with this problem with 9.0?? by CookieRevised on 08-04-2008 at 01:40 AM

His point is that by installing 9.0 you might have changed/damaged stuff.

Installing a newer version like that will obviously overwrite files and settings from an older version. Even if you uninstall the new version you will be left with certain things in such a way that the older version now uses (incompatible) stuff from the newer version. This is not uncommon and happens quite a lot and one of the reasons why non-beta testers should not use betas because they do not have the information needed to work properly with a beta and deal with possible known issues.

That is what he meant with "not if you installed 9.0 first"; thus, first as in: before installing and/or using 8.5 again for the second time. You have used 9.0 first, before using 8.5 now.

I suggest you do a complete clean install. That means manually removing everything from Messenger before re-installing it. And with everything I mean everything: registry keys (and I'm not just talking about the obvious keys under "Software/Messenger"), cache files, local data storages, restoring DLLs in the System directory, etc...

EDIT: follow the link MeEtc posted below. Although that doesn't reset everything back either. Some DLLs which were installed and other things can not be 'reset' with that. Normally that isn't needed either, but in this case it might be.

CookieRevised's reply to Windows Live Messenger BIG PROBLEM!

RE: I take it I'm the only one with this problem with 9.0?? by zabrak on 08-04-2008 at 03:12 AM

Okay I followed the steps on the link here - http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=68...d=752237#pid752237

Now it says i can't sign in due to my friends list not responding??? I did save my friends list before I did this on my Desktop...Should I drag and drop my fiends list in some folder related to WLM?

RE: I take it I'm the only one with this problem with 9.0?? by Chris4 on 08-04-2008 at 03:19 AM

What is the exact error message? Either copy word for word or screenshot it, then I can look it up and find a solution, or you can.

And you don't need to mess with your contacts list.

RE: I take it I'm the only one with this problem with 9.0?? by zabrak on 08-04-2008 at 03:28 AM

wait nevermind I tried signing in for the fourth time and now I got a different error message, something about a firewall. I then proceeded to disable my firewall and now I'm able to sign online.

...Although wtf? I only have one friend online? :S it shows my whole friends list, so I do have that, but it only show one person online...I wonder why it's him out of everybody else, I'll re-login.

EDIT: Okay nevermind. I signed online and and now it shows all the appropriate people online.

Man though..I can't stress enough how bummed out I am about losing all my emoticons, gifs, and display pictures. Oh well.

Anyway though, THANKS!

EDIT: ******* weird. I signed in not to long ago and it prompted me that I had no friends? I paniced, thinking all my friends vanished so I tried signing out and back in and they were back. This whole unstead beta thing is making me paranoid.
K I clicked 'debug' on the error that it gives me when I try to sign in; that's the same error that I was recieving before. THIS TIME however, after I clicked on Debut it tried to sign in, this is new.

After a good 4 min. of trying to sign in I get the following message:

"We were unable to sign you in to Windows Live Messenger BETA, possibly because of a problem with the service or with your Internet connection. Please make sure tahat you are connected to the Internet.

Error code: 81000306"

^o)

EDIT: I think it may be because my internet is f***** to hell atm. It's only 1/2 working...For instance, certain websites work and certain do. This error may be because of this...Although I wouldn't know how to fix this :(

Odd. Now it's saying that the service is unavailable?

"Signing in to Windows Live Messenger BETA failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.

Error code: 80048103"

:|:S:|...^o)

What I would do is uninstall ANY version of messenger you have that includes 8.5 and 9.X then delete the folders from your system, reboot and re-install
