OMG my computer just blew up!?!? by M73A on 08-07-2008 at 10:27 AM

ah nuts! i knocked the plug half out of its socket then the tower box went poof and it smells really bad :-(

how do u install a new power supply :-(

would it have killed anything else?

* M73A googles power supplies

Unscrew the old power supply, screw in the new one and connect everything the way it was before. Don't worry, most connectors will only fit where they have to.

hm. doesnt sound too bad then...

im just hoping nothing else went 'poof' along with the power box!

i was thinking of taking it to the local computer shop and just offering him money to do it, but do you think its easy enough to do if i just buy a power supply off him? im not a total newb at thing, just i have never had to replace a power supply before...

Yes, it's a fairly easy process. And it's highly unlikely anything else got damaged, power supply units are specifically designed to prevent this.
Also, there are numerous guides and even videos on how to replace a PSU on the internet. You could even take a picture of how everything is connected before removing the old unit if you want to be sure.

hm. okay thanks mezzanine :D i'll pop down to the shop in a bit an ask how much for a psu, and see if its much more for them to fit it. if its a stupid price i'll do it myself obviously!

thanks!

I had my last PC killed the same way (sparks from the back of the PSU). PSU, Mobo, TV card, and a harddisk died.

all of that died? okay... that's not so good..

i think something in the psu has blown up, so im hoping the damage to that has saved the rest of it! its rattling around a bit ^o)

Me and you are in the same boat..
I'm not sure if you know this, but as i've been told, you must get the correct number of connectors, power for gfx card if needed, and the number of pins on the connectors (ie: 20/24pin mainboard connectors. that's vital)
But if you did know all that, then i apologise for wasting your time. :P

lol what! okay diodsnt ask about that just went to the local shop and he checked everything....

i have a new psu, cost about £10! and a new hdd that cost £30... the power problem blew that up aswell and it short circuited the system when it was plugged in. damn comp! its running windows setup/drive format as we speak!! :D

Buying a cheap PSU is just asking for your system to get fried.

x2 - if you buy a cheap one, they're prone to do more damage to your computer in an event of a surge and whatnot. Trust us - buy a more expensive one

Well... don't rely on price. But yeah, I'd recommend A-brand PSUs to everybody using his PC on a daily basis.

one thing that should be mentioned in this thread is to NEVER open your power supply to see if you can fix it, there is a capasitor inside that can kill you very easily

It already says not to open those on the PSU itself.

* Menthix still replaced a fan and a fuse on his PSUs tho

I managed to get a nice surge of 240V by opening mine. (Twice in under 5 mins). My own fault for having the power connected though
