suggestions for a good domain name by Coastie on 08-27-2008 at 03:41 AM

any suggestions for a good domain name???

i'm picking my first one...and i can't think of a thing

i hate being the new kid....

RE: HELP! by prashker on 08-27-2008 at 03:52 AM

crusty-feces.com

And in all honesty, what exactly is it going to be for?

RE: HELP! by Coastie on 08-27-2008 at 03:58 AM

eh...kind of a difficult thing to explain

Gotta give a bit of an explination before it, sorry

I'm in the Coast Guard (i hope you all have gotten that much by now:P)

And I want to have a page that keeps an update on what I (and the people at my unit) are doing, as far as our recent missions and future plans...and it will mostly be a site for family and friends of the people at the unit...but open to anyone (especially everyone here!)

The catch is, i change units every couple of years (and with 19 1/2 years left in...maybe more, gonna be a few changes)

So it's gotta be something generic, but still something to do with the coast guard

oh yea...catch #2...can't say coast guard in the domain name

so sonic, as cool as crusty-feces.com would be, (and i would definitely use it if it was different content on the site)...i can't...thanks though!

Those are good.

It depends whether you want something "serious", you could have something like oceanwatchers.com or something:p

faeces > feces

I had lots of good suggestions until you gave me very specific little guidelines :)
But I do like the Basically-Amazing idea.

Today I was thinking, and though I believe I'm too late to help you out because I think you've already created the domain, I was going to suggest:

The-Sea-Men or Sea-Men.com (Ha.)
Out-To-Sea.com

Oh man, toddy, that one is definitely, certainly, indubitably, unmistakably my favorite of them all so far.

Brilliant!

RE: suggestions for a good domain name by jrlumba on 08-29-2008 at 01:31 AM

CoastGuardStatus.com?

StatusCheckCG.com?

but i do like what toddy suggested. :) "ThrowMeARope.com"

RE: suggestions for a good domain name by Coastie on 08-29-2008 at 05:43 AM

throwmearope.com

absolutely

amazing

haha...see i have the domain on a server right now that i really don't plan on keeping it on, it was just a free one that i could get used to so i'm not paying money for a month or two learning how to use something like godaddy

so that will DEFINITELY be in my considerations for a final name

i love you guys hahaha

RE: suggestions for a good domain name by Adeptus on 08-29-2008 at 06:34 AM

Sorry to be the messenger for the bad news, but...

code:
   Domain Name: THROWMEAROPE.COM
   Creation Date: 02-may-2007
You should've thought of it a year and a half ago.

Anyway, finding domain names is a nightmare, and thinking of one is just the start.  In the "big 3" top level domains (.com/.net/.org) almost everything one could want is taken -- most of it by "domain speculators" who register thousands of domains, hoping to hit a handful others will want bad enough to pay large sums of money for.  The first to go were the names that could somehow have something to do with anything that might be a marketable product, but by now, one can safely assume that 99.9% of single English language words are taken, as well as any common composites and short phrases.

In your case, it looks like you can still get throwmearope.net and throwmearope.org.  The .org TLD was intended for non-profit organizations of all kinds, while .com was intended for commercial enterprises.  These original charters were never enforced and have been almost universally ignored, but if you were to obey them, .org is actually more appropriate for your purpose.

If you like it, you should hurry up and register it now...

RE: suggestions for a good domain name by Nathan on 08-29-2008 at 12:14 PM

throwmearope.co.uk isn't taken.

Also - throw-me-a-rope.com isn't.

RE: suggestions for a good domain name by WildestHeart on 08-30-2008 at 03:23 AM

Yeah, see if you can create some kind of variation on the throwmearope idea, because it's a fantastic one. Much too fantastic to pass up :]

Adeptus has most excellent advice, get it quick before another genius with the awesome domain name tries to!

Is it cheesy to have a youtube video on your website?

i mean it has to do with my boat, the CGC Venturous, it's about a highly productive patrol in the windward pass that we had in '03, but i don't know if i want it on there or not...

got opinions?

thanks a bunch!

GoDaddy sucks. A lot of people have lost their domains at GoDaddy lately due to account hacking and mischievous activities. And the worst thing is that, they don't even do anything about it. Their customer support sucks too.

I'd rather recommend using Namecheap next time you renew :).
