old laptop anything but windows by Jarrod on 09-09-2008 at 10:05 AM

i have an old laptop, which i want to turn into a server for my lan and stuff, i want it to run pc bsd, the problem is it currently has win98 with no floppy and no cd so idk how to get the bsd installation to begin from the hard disk, does anyone have any bright ideas?
also i had a look at the hdd interface and it's some old ibm obscure one that has probably been phased out

either set up a network boot environment (if that's possible with the laptop) or get a USB floppy/CDrom drive.

good luck ;)

got both the laptop has no drivers, i have no drivers, and the bios doesn't support usb boot:(
edit[i didn't see network boot in the options, i had a thought to copy pc-bsd to the hard disk and hack the sys file that controls the boot to boot from the cd directory, the only problem is if i f**k stuff it up or it does not work then i've screwed the computer as i won't be able to boot anything to fix it

Thread Hijack :P!

I was looking for a USB DVD player yesterday, because I'm in a similar situation, but mine does have USB boot options. The local shops only have USB DVD burners, which are around 80 euros, way to expensive for something I'll hardly ever use again.

Did a few eBay searches, but can't find much. Does anybody know where to get a USB DVD Player for a decent price? It needs to be shipped to the Netherlands BTW, but things like eBay are ok if shipping doesn't cost too much.
