can people tell that I signed into MSN as "appear offline"?? by vanillaicecream on 09-12-2008 at 12:00 PM

So there is NOWAY of telling that someone just signed in apearing offline on msn messenger????  not on msn discovery not on buddy spy and not on any other program????

unless this person click on you and says hi or just opens a conversation window....other wise they are not going to get an alert or a little window saying that I signed into msn with an appear offline status??????

CORRECT????

no add one or whatever??? because i  heard that if u sign in (with an offline status) they get a warning sound to a specific contact, you get a warning when your contacts sign in as appear offline, but you still see them offline though. is this true????

a little paranoid here because i really want my privacy and sometimes like to sign in as appear offline....

BuudySpy appears to be only for Yahoo! IM clients. MessengerDiscovery can tell you if a contact deletes you I belive, but I am not certain and I'm fairly confident it doesn't let you detect people appearing offline. You do not hear a sound when someone signs in as appear offline. This is  a privacy issue.

However, it is possible to do (even if it is not accurately done):

Even that did not detect everybody that was actually online, and had no way to tell if they were still online when it alerted you

Yeah its a big privacy issue, and my best guess woul dbe that its not possible. So you can appear offline with peace of mind.

If you're in a convo with someone who's appearing offline, and the convo has not been disconnected, (timeout, etc) the invite button is enabled. If the connection is severed then it becomed disabled. This "bug" or whatever has been removed in WLM 9.0.

At most, that button would only be enabled when the "session" is open and not just because a contact is online.

You are indeed correct, SpunkyLoveMuff.

Messenger Discovery can detect if a contact COULD be appearing offline, but it's not 100% accurate

It happened to me once that a contact connected and appeared offline and I saw his display picture flashed. Then I tried to talk to that contact and it happened that he was indeed connected, but appearing offline

He probably changed status from online to appear offline when he signed in, or else was not using the official client. The official client sends a CHG message to the server with the initial status and no updates can be seen by contacts until the servers receive that message

If you sign in on appear offline then nobody will be able to see that you are online, and people will only know you are online if you start a conversation with them. It will still tell them that you are offline though.
